Today, reports of MSP are increasing for numerous localities worldwide in low temperature settings in ophiolites, orogenic massifs or intrusions. CH<sub>4</sub> emanates from focused seeps, hyperalkaline water springs or through diffuse seepage from the ground, typically along faults. MSP has a combination of stable C and H isotope composition that is different from that of biotic methane; it is likely produced by Fischer-Tropsch Type reactions between CO<sub>2</sub> (or other C compounds) and H<sub>2</sub> (from serpentinization) at low temperatures (typically <100<!--> <!-->°C) and its carbon is fossil, <sup>14</sup>C free, which does not derive from the more recent C dissolved in the hyperalkaline waters. MPS is more common than previously assumed; it may have played a key role in the origin of life, may fuel microbial life in igneous rocks on Earth and other planets, and can be an additional source of gas in atypical petroleum systems hosting ultramafic rocks.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101039,"journal":{"name":"Procedia Earth and Planetary Science","volume":"17 ","pages":"Pages 9-12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.proeps.2016.12.006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86336323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characterization of the current world situation in terms of geopolitics, economy, global threats and resources, including not only minerals and energy but also water and food, is addressed. Structural and environmental challenges that are reshaping the commodities and energy markets are discussed. The situation of water resources is addressed with the growing number of the countries with scarce access to resources and the need to find sustainable solutions for the future. Iowaite performed better than the other anion clays in term of water dearsenication, while hydrotalcite exhibited higher efficiencies on removal of fluoride and sulphate. The increase in dosage of iowaite dramatically elevated the chloride concentrations of the treated geothermal waters as the enhanced release of original interlayer chloride in the iowaite duo to the anion exchange. Therefore, hydrotalcite is the optimal sorbent for uptake of undesirable constituents in Qinghai geothermal waters and is promising for wider use in treatment of geothermal waters in the future.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101039,"journal":{"name":"Procedia Earth and Planetary Science","volume":"17 ","pages":"Pages 161-164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.proeps.2016.12.041","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91264370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
