For instance, the biggest solar flare ever recorded was on November 4, and we also have just had a lunar eclipse. Meanwhile, Europe's Mars Express spacecraft overcame the effects of these intense solar flares. These had the effect of temporarily knocking out navigation equipment aboard the orbiter. But it left the mission's Beagle 2 lander unscathed.
