This allowed a simple deterministic model of rock jointing to be developed. Using this model, key block analysis of the 380 Fm level footwall drive, of the No. 8 lode was carried out. The inherent limitations present in this simplified analysis are noted and the need for a probabilistic approach to key block formation is shown. The limitations of existing probabilistic methods of analysis are also examined. A different form of probabilistic analysis for key block determination has been developed using the computer code B3LHS. This method does not suffer from the inadequacies associated with other methods of probabilistic analysis.</p><p>A comparison was made between the results from B3LHS and deterministic key block analysis. It was found that this new model predicted the formation of more key block types than could be generated using the deterministic model. In addition, the probability of the formation of key blocks can now be determined. This model indicates the importance of the main factors which control the extent of subsidence produced on the surface, and also provides some appreciation of the influence of overburden strength on the angle of draw. A finite element model has been developed for application to subsidence-related rock mechanics problems. By the use of this model, the authors have investigated the effects rock mass behavioural properties on the limit angle, and also the effects of a distinct bed (strong or weak) in the overburden on the subsidence affected area at the surface. Relevant U.K. data from monitored sites for determining the three limit angles' variation with the dip of seam are discussed. The trend of the limit angle from the north of England to the Midland coalfields is also discussed in the paper. The flowmeter and ancillary equipment has been used to monitor continuously changes in gas flow and other parameters as a function of position in the borehole and distance of the hole from the face. Extensive work by many researchers has been reported on the test procedure, the effect of different loading configurations, sample size and the need for size correction factors. Mathematical formulae for the rational arrangement of boreholes for gas drainage in coal seams have been deduced based on the theoretical model of coal gas dynamics. The tables record the load bearing capacities, obtained from numerical modelling results, for four different types of steel arches namely circular, semicircular, semicircular with straight legs and splay-legged. A wide range of parametric values was taken into account. Support diameters ranging from 2 to 8 m were considered. The leg-to-overall height ratio of the arch was varied between zero and 0.4. Splay leg angles of 5, 10 and 15° were also included. Interpolating functions are introduced to help calculate the load bearing capacity of a steel arch whose design parameters do not match exactly with those cited in the tables. As the mining production process exhibits some similarities to both manufacturing and construction, it is appropriate to consider the applications of FPS to strip mining with the objective of deriving the same process benefits as have already been obtained in manufacturing.</p><p>The concepts of flexibility as understood in manufacturing are introduced and particular concepts for flexible strip mining systems (FSMS) are developed. The paper shows how FSMS can be applied and realized. The organizational and managerial prerequisites for such applications are discussed.</p><p>A knowledge base for the consequent development of flexible strip mining is prepared and the application of current FMS planning and design concepts to strip mining is described. The paper concludes with the statement that FSMS is a viable new technology approach to the planning, design and equipment allocation in strip coal mines. Though the degree of flexibility is considerably lower in strip mining than in construction or manufacturing, strip mining can still be analyzed within the FPS framework. If the same survey lines and monitoring techniques are subsequently used to establish the post-mining seafloor topography, a comparison of the two data sets may allow an evaluation of the resultant seafloor subsidence profiles.</p><p>After a brief review of the progress of the longwall seafloor subsidence monitoring program, the paper examines the marine survey undertaken to establish the pre-mining seafloor topography. The model takes into account the local deformation of impact ends of piston and shank adapter. A good agreement between theoretical and experimental results is obtained. The percussive energy transfer of hydraulic rock drills is analyzed with the model.
