A dynamic and kinematic analysis was carried out for the both cutting head types under the same operational and design conditions. The results were compared with those of long term in situ trials of longitudinal cutting heads.

The cutting head design was found to have a significant effect on the performance of both cutting head types. The resultant boom force reaction was found to act perpendicular to the boom axis for a longitudinal head, whilst it tended to act parallel to the boom axis for a transverse head. The change in the magnitude of the resultant boom reaction was also seen to be relatively high for the transverse heads during transitions from arcing to lifting. It was further emphasized that the consistency in the produce size of a transverse head is likely to be higher in arcing than in lifting.

","PeriodicalId":100929,"journal":{"name":"Mining Science and Technology","volume":"13 3","pages":"Pages 243-255"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0167-9031(91)90368-M","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88665849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional sill mat design appears to have developed from experience and timber mats are often used to ensure stability. Centrifuge model studies are combined with equilibrium analyses in this paper to provide insight into sill mat behaviour. Physical model testing provides particular insight into potential modes of failure under complex boundary stress or displacement conditions. The results show that sill mat reinforcing might be considered as an alternate to timber mats in cases where plain cemented sill mats would not be expected to be suitable.

","PeriodicalId":100929,"journal":{"name":"Mining Science and Technology","volume":"13 3","pages":"Pages 301-313"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0167-9031(91)90542-K","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91726075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
