Malyshev","doi":"10.1016/0368-3230(66)90110-8","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0368-3230(66)90110-8","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The average cross sections for radiative neutron capture have been calculated for 30 isotopes of Rb, Zr, Mo, Sn and Sm on the basis of the statistical theory of nuclear reactions. Nuclear surface penetrations obtained from the optical model, and level densities corresponding to the Fermi gas model were used in the calculation.</p><p>The results of the calculations are compared with the available experimental data at 25 keV. It is shown that there is a possibility of satisfactory quantitative evaluations of the average capture cross sections in isotopes for which there are no experimental data on the mean neutron resonance parameters.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100815,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nuclear Energy. Application of the semi-empirical procedure is illustrated for the University of Virginia pool-type reactor, loaded to approximate two-region cylindrical geometry. Measurements were made of the fast and thermal fission-producing fluxes, using highly enriched uranium foils, both bare and cadmium covered. The equivalent bare axial and radial components of the buckling were determined from the measurements, giving the principal buckling, <em>μ</em><sup>2</sup> The related slowing down area, <em>L</em><sub>1</sub><sup>2</sup>, was adjusted so as to make two-group theory fit the experiment. The best value for the slowing-down area in the 0·40 aluminium-to-water mixture was found to be 42·5 cm<sup>2</sup> equivalent to an age of 38 cm<sup>2</sup>. The slowing down area in the water reflector was found to be 25·5 cm<sup>2</sup>, in fair agreement with fission-to-thermal age measurements reported in the literature.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100815,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nuclear Energy.
