Mabie","doi":"10.1016/0022-2569(70)90008-X","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0022-2569(70)90008-X","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>This paper presents examples in the application of the curve-matching method to four-bar linkage design problems: (1) a linkage to indicate flow through an orifice, (2) a linkage to linearize the flow characteristics of a butterfly-type valve, (3) a linkage to replace a cam and oscillating follower, and (4) a linkage to replace sector gears.</p><p>New computer-drawn displacement curves have been developed which provide a means of approximating transmission angles. The error occurring in the output angular displacement of a four-bar linkage is shown to be maximum for a given angular input when the vectors representing the clearances are parallel to the coupler. If the input variable is within a given range, maximum error occurs when the transmission properties are the worst. After completing the synthesis, that is, after determining the link lengths, the position is also found in which the imposed transmission functions hold. No velocity and acceleration polygons are required. The present method is complementary to a previous similar one, so that it is possible to analyse accelerations of any four-bar linkage by either method to yield quicker and more accurate results than the polygon methods.
