{"title":"A Microprocessor Monitored Feed-Forward Super Trunk CATV Amplifier","authors":"Robert M. Blumenkranz","doi":"10.1109/TCATV.1980.285840","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/TCATV.1980.285840","url":null,"abstract":"This paper describes how a Microprocessor can be used to monitor the performance of an ultra low distortion Feedforward Super Trunk Amplifier System. The method described is capable of detecting changes in the loop cancellation of a Feedforward stage that may be caused by deterioration in the hybrid IC. A reduction in the loop cancellation of a Feed-forward stage results in an increase in the distortion level. Through the use of a Head-End Micro Conputer, a signal is sent to a transponder located in each amplifier station which in turn interrogates each RF hybrid IC in the individual Feedforward Amplifier Stages. The relative degree of loop cancellation is indicated at the end of the cascade by monitoring the amplitude of a tone which is generated by introducing modulation into each RF hybrid IC. However, only a very limited amount of hardware and associated application software has actually been implemented on CATV systems over this period of time. The technology has, nevertheless, undergone extens-ive development and practical utilization. This activity has taken place primarily in the industrial environment rather th.an within the CATV industry which originally developed the- broadband cable technology. Large scale production plants (in the order of one to two million square feet) recognized the need for an economical medium which. would permit the distribution of high speed data throughout the plant without the need for running individual twisted pairs in conduit. There was also a need for audio and television distribution but to a lesser degree. Various manufact ueers responded to this requirement by developing and marketing data modems to thie industrial and commercial world. In this process each modem vendor and user was utilizing the cable bandwidth in a different manner. The potential conflicts and incompatibilities were becoming evident to the growing number of users and modem vendors. The paper presents experimental and theoretical data for comparison of transmission performance. As a basis the non-coherent operation is reviewed. In order to evaluate the improvement by a coherent system the problem of optimum carrier phase relation is investigated. It is not feasible in just any location, due to inherent operational limits and cost considerations. This paper presents the aspects which must be considered when applying feedforward to CATV systems. Analysis of operation in trunk, super-trunk, bridgers, and distribution positions are given.
