Stellbrink","doi":"10.1016/0015-0568(83)90006-4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/0015-0568(83)90006-4","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The load-carrying capacity of composite structures in aircraft, spacecraft, etc. is expected to be greatly influenced by inherent defects or damages induced during utilisation. This paper reports on the ongoing experimental research in DFVLR WB-BK pertaining to the effect of simulated defects on the fatigue behaviour and residual strength of CFRP laminates. Two special kinds of mechanically produced damage in thin laminates caused by dropped tools are the main topics of this paper: a three-square indentation generated by a tapered triangular tip and a delamination zone produced by a ball-shaped tip. Berthelot","doi":"10.1016/0015-0568(83)90047-7","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1016/0015-0568(83)90047-7","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The mechanical fracture properties of sheet moulding compounds are studied in the case of a simple moulding geometry, for which deformation flow occurs in only one direction. The properties studied are: elastic limits, ultimate stress, and work of fracture. The experimental results show that mechanical properties depend essentially on the mould covering rate and not on the stretch length.
