The emphasis in this paper is adaptability to a rectangular waveguide circuit. To this end, an NRD guide–waveguide transition is designed. In the 60-GHz NRD Gunn diode oscillators to date, Gunn diodes sealed in a package dedicated to the NRD guide have been placed on special order. With a view to cost reduction, a Gunn diode mount is conceived in which a general-purpose-type Gunn diode can be used. The oscillation output of the fabricated oscillator is 13 dBm and the phase noise at 300 kHz offset is −113 dBc/Hz. Further, the frequency variation due to ambient temperature change is −1.3 ppm/°C so that the fabricated millimeter-wave oscillator is highly stable, with medium power output and low noise. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The attenuation frequencies are at two symmetric locations with respect to the center frequency of the passband. If the range between these two attenuation frequencies is considered as the passband, the loss is low and the group delay is constant in the passband region. In the present paper, the condition of the ripple generation in the passband is derived for the ring filter. Further, the ripple frequencies under the ripple generation conditions are numerically obtained and compared with the measured results. Next, the passband group delay is analytically derived and compared with the measured value. Further, a method of cascading the ring filters is studied. It is found that the transfer function of the cascaded ring filter is expressed in terms of a rational function of the Richard variable <span></span>. It is shown that a set of the characteristic impedances realizing the desired rational function can be inversely calculated. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The authors' objective is to achieve total use of semiconductors for realization of a 100-kW-class short-wave high-power transmitter. An optimal power device (MOSFET) to obtain high efficiency is selected. In addition, a circuit for realization of high efficiency and a synthesis method for excellent linearity are proposed. In the short-wave band, there is a problem of increased loss due to parasitic diodes for the digital-processing AM modulation device used in the middle-frequency range. It is shown that the method cannot be applied directly. Further, an optimum modulation format and a circuit configuration for realization of a short-wave high-efficiency AM transmitter are proposed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The dielectric characteristics are obtained accurately and simply by measuring S-parameter and by full-wave analysis for coplanar waveguide (CPW) composed on the substrate. Only the measurement of <i>S</i>21 response of the CPW is required for evaluation. The effective permittivity (ε<i>eff</i>) and attenuation constant (α) are calculated from the <i>S</i>21 data. Relative permittivity (ε<i>r</i>) and tanδ of substrate material are estimated by relating the ε<i>eff</i> and α quantitatively with their simulated values calculated by the Extended Spectral Domain Approach (ESDA) taking the thickness effect of the conductor into consideration. Three kinds of BST substrates with different Ba to Sr ratios were measured as test samples. The estimated ε<i>r</i>'s of Ba0.3Sr0.7TiO3, Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3, and Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 were 662, 1650, and 4450, respectively. These ε<i>r</i>'s decrease slightly as the frequency increases. The estimated errors for the ε<i>r</i>'s are estimated to be less than 0.3%. This method is useful for the evaluation even of a small variation of dielectric constant in high-permittivity materials. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Azopolymer has the two properties of being able “to form a surface relief structure” and “to immobilize particles in the surface” by light irradiation. First, the former characteristic was used to form a periodic two-dimensional relief pattern template on an azopolymer surface by two-beam interference exposure, and the particles were arranged on the surface. Then the latter characteristic was used to selectively immobilize particles by light irradiation, and unimmobilized particles were removed by washing. As a result, we demonstrated that particles could be arranged in a regular two-dimensional array in a square structure and a hexagonal structure, and a two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide structure could be easily fabricated by the micropatterning of particles. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to precisely control the thickness of these films, photolithography is used to fabricate spacer posts on a substrate, and a printing technique that can form a liquid crystal/monomer solution film on the substrate uniformly. Control voltages are applied to the layer via transparent electrodes; in order to prevent a short circuit between these electrodes, an insulator layer is also formed on the other substrate. Once the two substrates are attached to one another, polymer walls and fibers are created in the liquid crystal layer between the two substrates by photopolymerization-induced phase separation which was induced by two-step exposure of ultraviolet light. A fabricated device is sandwiched between a polarizer and a diffuse mirror to make a reflective display. Uniform display operation was obtained when the device was driven with a voltage, even when the device was bent with a 5-cm radius of curvature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. From many kinds of memory, this paper focuses on semantic memory and episodic memory which are declarative. It is thought that semantic memory is formed from common part of episodic memories. Though it is clarified which part of the brain is related to semantic memory, the neural circuit has not been clarified, especially concerning STDP which is minute learning regulation in time. We propose a neural circuit model forming semantic memory from episodic memory using STDP. By changing connections and input patterns in the model, we have examined the appropriate conditions by which semantic memory can be formed. The results show that three input routes, recurrent input, and appropriate propagation delay are necessary for forming semantic memory. Moreover, we have experimented forming a semantic memory after forming another semantic memory. The result shows that our model is able to form a semantic network. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In a vision-based system, the variety of viewpoints is important for effective detection/tracking of target motions. As image sequences observed from various viewpoints contain rich information regarding entire scenes, these images are also useful for video-based analysis of human behaviors/interactions. We employ multiple numbers of mobile cameras mounted on human heads and fixed-viewpoint cameras to observe a human interaction scene. In our method, 3D human positions are tracked by using both mobile and fixed-viewpoint camera images. Transitions of human and background positions in images are estimated by using the tracked 3D positions, and the positions and poses of the mobile camera are determined by comparing the observed images with the estimation. Consequently, our method can provide position information for all humans and head motions for the humans wearing head-mounted cameras.
