In this work, several versions of the direct linear equation solver PVSOLVE were implemented in the general purpose, nonlinear finite element code NIKE3D. Timing studies were performed on Sun and IBM workstations, CRAY Y/MP and C90 supercomputers, and the distributed memory MEIKO CS-2 parallel computer. Cost breakdowns and efficiency curves are presented for a benchmark problem with several mesh densities. The distributed memory implementation is shown to be most efficient for large problems, where MEIKO performance is comparable to that of a single CRAY processor.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100325,"journal":{"name":"Computing Systems in Engineering","volume":"5 4","pages":"Pages 363-368"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-0521(94)90018-3","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84322368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This algorithm is implementable on MIMD parallel processors, and uses the p-extension of the finite element method. The problem domain is partitioned into a number of suitable subdomains by using an automatic domain decomposer, and each subdomain is thereupon assigned to a processor in the multiprocessor system. Connection Machine's CM-5 system is being used for the present implementation. Most of the previous efforts to parallelize finite element analysis were confined to parallel algorithms for direct or iterative equation solvers, and did not produce satisfactory performance because of the small granularity of parallel tasks. Also, these efforts were based on the h-extension of the finite element method, and hence could not exploit some of the inherent advantages available in the p-extension. As the current algorithm utilizes the domain decomposition technique and is based on the p-version of the finite element method, it is expected to produce good performance, particularly for large scale structures. The feedback algorithm is based on an iterative scheme derived from the domain decomposition technique for applications to problems of solid mechanics. It has been tested for two-dimensional problems showing good convergence characteristics. Current efforts are also directed towards generalizing the scheme, and include adaptive model refinement.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100325,"journal":{"name":"Computing Systems in Engineering","volume":"5 4","pages":"Pages 325-335"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-0521(94)90015-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74709534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Motivation behind the development of a new multi-dimensional failure criterion is due mainly to the lack of a sufficiently accurate mathematical tool that accounts for the behavior of brittle material with anisotropic properties. Such a criterion should be able to provide a reliable maximum load estimate so that design of the structure is not penalized in terms of excessive weight requirements. The failure criterion developed is represented by a fracture surface in a six-dimensional stress space. The criterion is applied for failure prediction of SR-200 beryllium sheet structures, a non-homogeneous orthotropic material used widely in space applications. Two experiments are used to verify the criterion.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100325,"journal":{"name":"Computing Systems in Engineering","volume":"5 3","pages":"Pages 285-293"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-0521(94)90007-8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91754224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a transient base drive procedure is used to estimate the flight loads on a spacecraft, during the spacecraft design iterations. In this base drive procedure, only the spacecraft dynamic model is used as against a coupled spacecraft-launch vehicle dynamic models. The well established fixed interface modal model representation, with a determinate interface, is used for the spacecraft substructure. The second part of this paper is on a new, constrained optimization based procedure for notching the qualification level sine vibration profile, specified by the launch vehicle organization. The base drive and the “notched” sine vibration profile generation procedures are demonstrated on a spacecraft stick model and a spacecraft structure with solar array panels.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100325,"journal":{"name":"Computing Systems in Engineering","volume":"5 3","pages":"Pages 275-283"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-0521(94)90006-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91754223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
