The architecture and syntax presented in this paper is a response to the very real need for the development of a unified approach to distributed databases. The development has also been influenced by the imminent publication of a draft proposed standard for the network database model [1]. It is anticipated that the formal basis upon which the architecture and syntax is based [2,3] can be used to form a suitable specification for the relational database model. A draft standard is also in preparation for such a system [4], but is less well advanced than the network specification.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100323,"journal":{"name":"Computers and Standards","volume":"3 1","pages":"Pages 33-56"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0167-8051(84)90025-1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74256000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A model of an abstract computing machine environment is introduced as a desirable kind of environment and as a way for management to understand the standardisation process. Management involvement is seen as all important, not only to support standardisation but to guide the increased flexibility which standardisation brings.
