It mainly included a feature recognition algorithm to extract tube and rib features for analysis, a DFM analysis algorithm for the optimization of feature dimensions, and a design modification algorithm to modify unqualified ribs and tubes automatically. The proposed feature recognition algorithm recognized auxiliary faces, including translation, wall and bottom faces, on the inner surface of a thin-wall part, and then grouped each set of protrusion faces. Tubes and ribs were then recognized with separate recognition algorithms. The proposed DFM analysis algorithm provided a data structure of fillet, rib and tube features for the evaluation of rib and tube dimensions. The optimization of feature dimensions included thickness, height, draft angle, base radius, and space for both ribs and tubes in accordance with various design guides. Finally, the design modification algorithm could modify all unqualified ribs and tubes automatically. We investigate genuine multi-sided surface representations that can be converted into standard tensor product format, such as NURBS. Multi-sided patches offer versatility in shape design, and permit smooth, watertight connections between adjacent patches using prescribed cross-derivatives; however, they can seldom be utilized by the majority of CAD/CAM systems, which handle surfaces only in standard data formats. Tensor product surfaces, on the other hand, may be too rigid for shape design, and trimmed patches can only be smoothly connected up to user-defined tolerances. This motivates the search for schemes that benefit from both representations. We analyze four multi-sided surface representations that allow precise conversion into tensor product format, namely S-patches, Warren’s patch, Kato’s patch and a variant of the Charrot–Gregory patch. We compare these schemes from various aspects; in particular, we deal with surface equations, singularities, degrees of the converted surfaces, the control structure built and the computational efficiency of the conversion. Although major engineering CAD vendors has begun to push out direct modeling module in their products, integration between the two modeling methods is still an open issue. The key technical issue to be resolved is: how to determine the updated feature model after direct modeling operations are conducted? This paper proposes an approach to resolving this issue, consisting of determination of feature volume variations, generation of candidate update operations and determination of optimal update operation. Redesign is required for the product improvement. The function design is one of the most important tasks in a redesign process. In order to generate an optimal solution of the product redesign efficiently for enterprises, this paper proposes a function redesign method based on the extension theory. For a target product to be redesigned, a hierarchal function model of the target product is first formed using the function analysis. Degree of the function importance is then determined by applying the triangular fuzzy number. Difficult function units and high important degree functions are decided according to redesign requirements and ranking of function importance degrees. In order to apply the difficult function units and high importance degree functions in the innovative design, a function redesign process model is developed based on the extension theory and TRIZ tools. Technology effect matrix is a patent map to effectively display the technical information of patents, which provides an effective tool for enterprises to analyze and identify technology opportunities to plan their patent strategy and direction of development. However, the existing matrix analysis method has problems of the information coupling, lack of innovation inspiration for designers, and lack of micro chromatography analysis. This paper combines the technology effect matrix and identification of technology readiness level to build a three-dimensional technology effect model for a comprehensive analysis of patent information. It helps enterprises to effectively formulate scientific technology research and development strategies. Through a cross technology domain patent search, designers can be inspired to develop innovative design with high novelty.
