A partnership with ANP Technologies, a Delaware company that manufactures and produces products relating to enviromnental monitoring, has led to the development of a classroom-ready educational tool. This module uses a sequence that prompts students to engage, explore, explain, and evaluate while meeting various concepts within the Next Generation Science Standards. Located in Dover, Delaware, Wesley College is a minority-serving liberal arts institution where non-science majors are required to take a topical science course emphasizing scientific literacy. Prior to this project, there was no coimnon instructional tools or assessment between the various class sections. The module developed in tliis project was piloted in the spring of 2019 along with a post-test to assess module effectiveness and consistency between sections. It was hypothesized that there would be no significant differences between average post-test scores of the different sections following the implementation of the module and that students would achieve proficiency (70% or higher) on at least half of the questions. Results confirmed the consistency between the sections as there were no significant differences in mean post-test score. Students were able to meet threshold on 7 of the 12 questions, suggesting this module could be useful in scientific literacy education.</p>","PeriodicalId":92840,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... The College continually advances innovative programming to boost college readiness and to stem the dropping numbers of its first-time (freshmen) applicants. In order to help unprepared students for the rigors of its programs and to enhance a truly integrated STEM curriculum2-8, Wesley strengthened diverse academic equity by implanting data-science as cornerstone undergraduate research projects9-11. To further scale-up student-engagement and to nationally disseminate our high-impact STEM-education successes12,13, the College developed an Undergraduate Research Center for Analytics, Talent, and Success (UR-CATS)14. To streamline procurement documents and hazardous-waste handling workflows, the College implemented the use of an online platform15 that resulted in major annual savings. To engage middle and high school students, Wesley STEM undergraduates established a Science Club to demonstrate hands-on science lessons, so STEM concepts come to life. To help explain the learning mechanisms by which integrated STEM experiences support outcomes, this paper presents interventions with particular attention to curriculum design for incoming STEM freshmen who place into pre-Calculus or a lower math course. To show that engagement with STEM college students as role models have a positive impact on high-school student interest, we provide examples where Science Club members pose challenges and show different perspectives on everyday items. In summary, Wesley project outcomes have allowed for coordinated interventions3-9,12-14 in student well-being and student success.</p>","PeriodicalId":92840,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... {"title":"Repeated Laser Doppler Flowmetry Procedures in Bone Do Not Alter Perfusion, Localized Inflammation, or Gait Patterns.","authors":"Elizabeth Easter","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Bone is a highly vascularized tissue that requires adequate blood perfusion to remodel in response to loading and heal after fracturing. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is a technique that has been validated to measure blood flow in mouse hindlimb bones <i>in vivo</i>, but to date it has only been used for measurements at a single timepoint, because the invasive surgery required to place the probe on the bone surface induced prolonged inflammation. The goal of this study was to determine if a modified, minimally invasive LDF technique could be performed repeatedly at the same bone site without altering gait patterns or causing substantial inflammation at the wound site, which would confound bone measurements in studies using exercise therapy. Twenty 14-week-old C57Bl/6J mice were divided into two activity groups and two LDF groups for 4 weeks prior to sacrifice. The exercise group performed daily treadmill exercise (30 min/day, 5 days/week), while the sedentary group spent a matched time on a stationary treadmill. Mice were further divided into either a repeated LDF group, which received an LDF procedure weekly (n=5 per activity group), or an endpoint LDF group, which underwent the LDF procedure only once (n=5 per activity group). LDF measurements were taken on the anteromedial surface of the right proximal tibial metaphysis. The effect of the LDF procedure was assessed with measures of blood perfusion, wound healing, and gait kinematics. Repeated LDF procedures did not alter blood perfusion measurements across weeks, either in the exercise or sedentary group. Wound area was measured from weekly photographs to determine the extent of inflammation. All wounds were fully closed within one week by the time of the next procedure. Changes in mouse gait kinematics were analyzed using weekly high-speed video of treadmill running. Duty cycle and phase dispersion remained constant from week to week with repeated LDF procedures. These results validated that the modified, minimally invasive LDF technique can be used for serial measurements of intraosseous blood perfusion without inducing potentially confounding effects of inflammation or altered gait or undesired changes in the perfusion itself. These findings will enable future longitudinal studies of bone perfusion with various pathologies, such as diabetes and stroke.</p>","PeriodicalId":92840,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ...
