Methods: This is a prospective study of 40 eyes of 40 patients who underwent Pars Plana Vitrectomy for the removal of posterior segment intraocular foreign bodies in Western Regional Institute of India. We studied the following parameters: age, gender, wound site, IOFB characteristics (shape, size, and location), initial and final visual acuity. Results: Among the study participants, 19 worked in factories, 6 were housekeepers, 7 were farmers and the remaining 5 patients were either unemployed or retired at the time of the injury. The foreign body was embedded in the surface of the retina (32.5%), located in the vitreous (55%) and in the sclera (12.5%). Nine patients (22.5%) developed delayed Retinal Detachment, which was the largest single cause of blindness in this group. Interpretation & Conclusion: Our study concludes that the larger the size of posterior segment IOFB, presence of pre-existing or secondary RD, vitreous hemorrhage poorer the prognosis. We also emphasize the use of protective eye equipmentsat workplace in preventing this disability caused by penetrating ocular injury.","PeriodicalId":90274,"journal":{"name":"National journal of integrated research in medicine","volume":"9 1","pages":"81-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41562416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The infection is endemic in more than 80 countries, with more than 1.3 billion people at risk and 120 million already infected globally. Mass drug administration (MDA), for control of filariasis was launched by government of India in 1996. Under this programme, all the beneficiaries in the age group of 2 to 60 years (excluding pregnant mothers, people above 60 and having other illness), will be administered. Objectives: To assess the coverage and compliance of MDA in Bidar district. Methodology: The MDA was carried out in the district in the month of January 2015. After visiting the selected cluster (3 rural and 1 urban) the information was collected from the 30 houses in each cluster randomly. Results: Out of 653 population surveyed, 592 (90.7%) had received the tablet and 61 (9.3%) had not received the tablet. Out of 592, 314(53%) had taken full course, 77(13%) had partially taken the drugs and 201 (34%) had not taken the tablets at all. 9(2.3%) had reported minor side effects like vomiting and dizziness. 3 (0.76%) people reported gastro-enteritis and abdominal discomfort, which subsided after taking the treatment. The compliance was only 53%, which is much below the target of 85%. Conclusion: Effective drug delivery strategies such as proper area demarcation, repeat house visits have to be done to improve coverage. Involvement of elected representatives, religious leaders is very much essential to spread knowledge about the programme, co-operation in educating the reluctant families or individuals.","PeriodicalId":90274,"journal":{"name":"National journal of integrated research in medicine","volume":"6 1","pages":"3601-3603"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68917585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim, This study was conducted to estimate the clinical and bacteriological profile and their antibiotic sensitivity testing in ICU infected patient.Materials and methods, 245 patients clinically diagnosed to have infections in ICU were studied prospectively in the Department of Microbiology, Indira Gandhi Govt. Medical College from Sep. 2009- Dec. 2011. Depending on sites of infections various samples were collected and processed as per the standard guidelines. The isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method as per CLSI 2012 guideline. Results, The incidence of pneumonia, blood stream infection and urinary tract infections was 61.6%, 20.1% and 11% respectively. P. aeruginosa (16.3%) was the commonest isolate in ICU infection followed by A. baumannii (13.5%) and K. pneumoniae (11.8%) with maximum sensitivity to imipenem, piperacillin tazobactum and amikacin. All Staphylococcus and Enterococcus species were sensitive to vancomycin and linezolid. Gram-negative pathogens acquired from ICU patients in our settings show high resistance to antibiotics. Conclusion, Regular monitoring of the pattern of resistance of common pathogens in the ICUs is critical in planning the best routines for empirical treatment of infectious patients.
