Women reporting past and/or current suicidal ideation (SI) (46%; n = 35) were compared to women who did not report thoughts of suicidal ideation (NSI) (54%; n = 41). SI women were more likely to be homeless (p = .020), to report histories of emotional (p = .022), physical (p < 001), sexual abuse (p = .002) and psychiatric treatment (p < .001), and less likely to be married (p = .024) than NSI women. Psychiatrically, SI women were more likely to have co-morbid current and lifetime disorders than NSI women. These findings highlight the need to identify women with histories of suicidal ideation, recognize the potential relapse risk imposed by emotional distress, and confront these issues in treatment.</p>","PeriodicalId":89418,"journal":{"name":"Journal of maintenance in the addictions","volume":"3 2-4","pages":"53-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3142928/pdf/nihms245817.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"30038212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Other studies in this area have used subjects using other forms of heroin more amenable to inhaling. PARTICIPANTS, DESIGN, AND MEASUREMENT: A purposive sample of 199 patients in 6 methadone programs in Texas were interviewed in 2002-2003 using a structured instrument. FINDINGS: At admission to treatment, those who were heroin inhalers were more likely to be African American, to live with their families, to have income from wages, and to report fewer days of problems on most of the ASI measures. Those who shifted from inhaling to injecting were more likely to be Hispanic and to have had mental health problems that interfered with their lives and to have had less nurturing while growing up. Injectors were older at this treatment admission, had more treatment episodes and more times in jail, and were more likely to have hepatitis C, AIDS, or gonorrhea. There were high levels of physical and mental problems and histories of traumatization as children and adults for almost all the respondents. Males were as likely as females to have been sexually abused as children or as adults. CONCLUSIONS: The high rates of mental and physical problems among all the clients interviewed showed the need for comprehensive services to be delivered within the substance abuse treatment programs. Histories of trauma and sexual abuse should be addressed for both male and female clients.</p>","PeriodicalId":89418,"journal":{"name":"Journal of maintenance in the addictions","volume":"3 1","pages":"61-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3088121/pdf/nihms-286200.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29866734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the bulk of this research is on outpatient treatment in methadone clinics. This study examined a residential treatment program that allowed clients on methadone, a rare treatment opportunity that is growing nationwide. Staff (N = 87) working in four therapeutic community (TC) facilities, were surveyed using the Abstinence Orientation Scale (AOS), Methadone Knowledge Scale (MKS), and Disapproval of Drug Use Scale (DDU). The relationships between TC staff characteristics and scores on the assessment measures were tested for differences. Staff members who affirmed having been in treatment had greater methadone knowledge than those who had not. Staff members who participated in methadone sensitivity training had greater methadone knowledge and lower abstinence orientation than those who did not attend the training. Staff in this study had stronger abstinence orientation than found in studies of methadone clinic staff, which may represent a barrier to methadone in residential settings. This study suggests that staff experience is correlated with attitudes and knowledge about methadone and that staff training is associated with changing attitudes and knowledge about methadone.</p>","PeriodicalId":89418,"journal":{"name":"Journal of maintenance in the addictions","volume":"3 1","pages":"47-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1300/J126v03n01_05","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"31333336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
