Over a period of 10 years, decision-making processes have been developed to encourage long-term and ambitious thinking in tackling the damaging modifications that have affected these rivers. The programme is based on natural ecosystem function generated by natural riverine processes. The decision-making process aims to tackle practical constraints to more natural river function and to generate strategic plans around which available resources can be harnessed in a coordinated and logical fashion, in partnership with local stakeholders and landowners. The programme has been successful in developing strategic plans for most specially protected rivers in England, and practical implementation of measures is well underway and increasing each year. The process has been valuable in providing a basis for bids to a range of domestic and European funds, and for drawing local stakeholders together within a common delivery framework. Over time, more local stakeholder resources are becoming available as the benefits of restored natural ecosystem function are becoming more apparent. The physical modifications affecting these rivers reflect the impacts on the wider river network in England and in other developed countries. The lessons learnt from this programme over the past 10 years will be of use to those working on river restoration elsewhere in England, the UK, Europe and further afield. Whilst the current global economic outlook for funding is bleak, the processes established in England allow available resources to be harnessed and used in the most efficient way possible. This will be important for river restoration initiatives wherever they are attempted and for whatever purpose.","PeriodicalId":89137,"journal":{"name":"Freshwater reviews : a journal of the Freshwater Biological Association","volume":"8 1","pages":"1 - 25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1608/FRJ-8.1.927","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67393054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this review, I present some results from a series of airborne campaigns organised in the English Lake District between 1986 and 1991. The main instrument used for the surveys was a Daedalus 1268 Airborne Thematic Mapper. This instrument acquires data in 11 spectral bands ranging from the blue visible to the thermal infrared. The visible band data was used to study the spatial distribution of the phytoplankton and the power-boat movements on the surface temperature of Windermere. The review describes some of the methods used to process the acquired imagery and includes an introduction to the procedures used to analyse the spectral data now being gathered by a new generation of airborne instruments. Introduction The impression that lakes are homogeneous features in a structured landscape is very misleading. Most lakes of spatial scales from a few metres to several kilometres (George, 1993; George & Jones, 1987). Identifying the by very short-term changes in the weather (George & Edwards, 1976; George & Heaney, 1978). It is usually assumed that adult salmon do not feed in fresh water. This view is contradicted here and one of the authors of this chapter has published evidence to show that the stomachs of adults contained food of both freshwater and terrestrial origin. Earlier work on the food of salmon at sea was essentially descriptive, but the next chapter shows that improvements in methodology have produced more quantitative information on near-shore feeding and open-ocean feeding of post-smolts, and open-ocean feeding of pre-adults and adult pre-spawners. All this information is summarised in this chapter and shows that Atlantic salmon are opportunistic feeders at sea, utilising a wide range of prey. Salmon exhibit a wide variation in growth and the next chapter","PeriodicalId":89137,"journal":{"name":"Freshwater reviews : a journal of the Freshwater Biological Association","volume":"4 1","pages":"81 - 83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1608/FRJ-4.1.429","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67393035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The response mechanisms of zooplankton are diverse and efficient and may explain the success and richness of freshwater zooplankton in optically variable waters. While no single behavioural or physiological protection mechanism seems to be superior, and while several unexplained and contradictory patterns exist in zooplankton UVR ecology, recent increases in our understanding are consistent with UVR playing an important role for zooplankton. This review examines the variability in freshwater zooplankton responses to UVR, with a focus on crustacean zooplankton (Cladocera and Copepoda). We present an overview of UVR-induced damages, and the protection and recovery mechanisms freshwater zooplankton use when exposed to UVR. We review the current knowledge of UVR impact on freshwater zooplankton at species and community levels, and discuss briefly how global change over the last three decades has influenced the UVR milieu in lakes.</p>","PeriodicalId":89137,"journal":{"name":"Freshwater reviews : a journal of the Freshwater Biological Association","volume":"3 2","pages":"105-131"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079903/pdf/ukmss-34034.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"29836313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Book Review: Seeking Sustainability in an Age of Complexity 书评:在复杂时代寻求可持续性

And so this book is a brave and welcome addition to a growing body of work seeking to synthesise practical guidance from the immense complexity of modern socio-ecological systems. As the title itself might suggest, it is not an easy read. However, Harris leads us through a range of interconnected themes that amplify the urgency and complexity associated with the management or restoration of multiple ‘capitals’ at scales appropriate to embody intergenerational equity, in the face of limited resources and information, and which must be delivered through effective market mechanisms that simultaneously ensure or restore trust in science and institutions. No simple feat; hence, no simple read!","PeriodicalId":89137,"journal":{"name":"Freshwater reviews : a journal of the Freshwater Biological Association","volume":"5 1","pages":"101 - 102 - 374"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1608/FRJ-2.1.6","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67392998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
