Fabella Memorial Hospital in June-July 1973, the relationship between lactation and childhood mortality was extricated. The median length of breastfeeding was 9.1 months. The probability of dying for infants was highest in the 1st quarter of life. Of the 98 children who died in the first 2 years of life, 55 (56%) were not breastfed at all and 18 (18%) were weaned before death. 1/3 of the women who got pregnant were still lactating and 13% did so until the 4th month. Follow-up questionnaires were sent to them 4-5 weeks after discharge to elicit data on details of feeding. Responses received from 91 women were analyzed to determine relationships among beliefs/knowledge, feelings, conditions, and breastfeeding. Results show that knowledge was positively related to conditions considered possible for breastfeeding and to a lesser extent to feelings, while feelings and conditions were not significantly correlated. Knowledge, intention to breastfeed, husband's support, and friends' support differentiated those who breastfeed from nonbreastfeeders. Knowledge, friends' support, and husband's support were associated with length of breastfeeding. Previous experience, intention, and husband's support was found to explain 44% of the variance in breastfeeding duration.</p>","PeriodicalId":85272,"journal":{"name":"Philippine journal of nutrition","volume":"34 1","pages":"28-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22005609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
