According the Bulletin of Major Data from 1990 Census (Number 6) published by the State Statistical Bureau in May 20, 1991, on an average, the rate of male is 51.45%, and the rate of female is 48.55%; however, for 0-13 age group, the rate of male is 51.99%, and the rate of female is 48.01%. It means that, within 14 years before July 1, 1990, the sex ratio of newly-born babies had raised by 2.32%. With the further analysis, we can also see that the sex ratio in any year of the 14 years is higher than that of the total population. Moreover, the younger, the larger the proportion of male is and the smaller the proportion of female is. The unusual sex ratio will have a direct effect on marriage. In about 20 years, each year there will be 1.2 million males who will not be able to find a girl to marry. Therefore, it is imperative that macroscopic regulation and control of sex ratio be taken as an important part of family planning work.
","PeriodicalId":84440,"journal":{"name":"China population headliners","volume":" 1","pages":"2-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22037320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Shanghai needs to improve its perinatal care.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In view of the situation that the perinatal mortality rate of Shanghai keeps dropping, doctor Hua Jiazeng from the Shanghai No. 1 Maternity Hospital told the reporter recently that to further lower down the perinatal mortality rate in Shanghai, the perinatal care should be improved through replacing maternity facilities and equipments, keeping the mother and her baby together in the same ward in hospital, and raising the breastfeeding rate. According to the latest statistics, the maternity mortality rate is now 23.8/100.000 in Shanghai, and the perinatal mortality rate has been 12-13/1000 in the past 10 years. These numbers show that there is still a gap between Shanghai and some developed countries regarding perinatal care. There are 3 reasons behind this: 1) since the early 1980s, Shanghai has been in the birth peak period and each year there are 180,000 babies born on the average, as a result, short of beds and lack of staff, the quality of puerperium monitoring and parturition treatment is impaired; 2) maternity facilities and equipments in quite a few hospitals are obsolete and do not suit the needs of modern maternity care anymore, and many hospitals still put newly-born babies together in a big ward which make babies easy to be infected; and 3) breastfeeding rate is dropping as more families do not choose breastfeeding. Doctor Hua suggests: first, we should make a good use of the 3-level maternal and childcare network covering the whole city, strengthen primary care, and pay particular attention to the women of 1st pregnancy at middle age and the unhealthy pregnant women; 2nd, health and medical sectors should put some funds on improving maternal facilities and equipments, increase maternity staff, and raise the income of maternity workers; lastly, all hospitals should keep the mother and baby in the same ward, and greatest efforts should be made to raise the breastfeeding rate.
","PeriodicalId":84440,"journal":{"name":"China population headliners","volume":" 1","pages":"6-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22037322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the 10% sample data from the 4th Census, cities are the places to which people like to move, and Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai have a highest immigration rate; remote border provinces are the places where people like to move out, and Guangxi, Sichuan and Heilongjiang have the highest emigration rate. With the further reformation and more free policies, people no more cling to their homeland and are more inclined than before to move to other places to find more proper jobs. Specialists indicate that population migration is a result of economic development an inexorable trend of urbanization, and it is significant to have a planned adjustment of spatial population distribution.
","PeriodicalId":84440,"journal":{"name":"China population headliners","volume":" 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22037318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"The change of family size and structure in China.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

With the socioeconomic development and change of people's values, there is some significant change in family size and structure in China. According to the 10% sample data from the 4th Census, 1 family has 3.97 persons on an average, less than the 3rd Census by 0.44 persons; among all types of families, 1-generation families account for 13.5%, 3 generation families for 18.5%, and 2-generation families account for 68%. Instead of large families consisting of several generations and many members, small families has now become a principal family type in China. According to the analysis of the sample data from the 4th Census, the family size is mainly decided by the fertility level in particular regions, and it also depends on the economic development. So family size is usually smaller in more developed regions, such as in Beijing, Tianjin, Zhejiang, Liaoning as well as in Shanghai of which family size is only 3.08 persons; and family size is generally larger in less developed regions such as in Qinghai, Guangxi, Gansu, Xinjiang, and in Tibet of which family size is as large as 5.13 persons. Specialists regard the increase of the number of families as 1 of the major consequences of the economic development, change of living style, and improvement of living standard, Young people now are more inclined to live separately from their parents. However, the increase of the number of families will undoubtedly place more pressure on housing and require more furniture and other durable consumer goods from the market. Therefore, the government and other social sectors related should make corresponding plans and policies to cope with the increase of families and minifying of family size so as to promote family planning and socioeconomic development, and to create better social circumstances for small families.
","PeriodicalId":84440,"journal":{"name":"China population headliners","volume":" 1","pages":"2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22037319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Breast-feeding rate has dropped to 12.7% in Shanghai.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Only 1 baby in 8 is lucky enough to be fed at the breast in Shanghai. According to the Conference on the Promotion of Breastfeeding in China held on November 11, 1991, the breastfeeding rate in Shanghai has kept dropping with years. The rate is 32% is 1979, 23% in 1984, and only 12.7% in 1991 according to the sample survey. Although breastfeeding has been put on the agenda of the work of maternal and child care since the late 1970s and much work has been done by the maternal and child care workers on this, the trend of dropping of the breastfeeding rate is still hard to be reversed. Specialists in the field think the reason behind this is that many parents as well as grandparents are afraid that their only baby cannot be fully fed at the breast, and they only see fast weight gaining as a sign of healthiness. In addition, the marketing and gifting of the overseas dried-milk businessmen is also dedicated to the dropping of the breastfeeding rate. So now some regulations have been formulated in Shanghai to prohibit businessmen from marketing and gifting dried milk to hospitals.
","PeriodicalId":84440,"journal":{"name":"China population headliners","volume":" 1","pages":"7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22037323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
