Grand Rapids, Mich.: Brazos Press. 2002. Pp. 431. $34.99. That Brazos Press has published John H. Yoder's Preface to Theology: Christology and Theological Method is a mark of the boldness of their commitment to publishing substantive theological works. Originally written as the content for a course Yoder taught at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries from 1960 to 1981, Preface saw limited circulation outside the classroom in a paperback edition marketed by the seminary bookstore. This edition is given a lengthy and helpful introduction by Stanley Hauerwas and Alex Sider. They do a masterful job of explaining the significance of these lectures for an understanding of Yoder, and also helpfully explain aspects of the book that are somewhat dated by the fact that they represent Yoder's thought and the state of scholarship circa 1960. They are right on target in suggesting that the reader whose primary knowledge of Yoder is the exegetical and ethical work The Politics of Jesus will get a much fuller picture of his thought by reading this work, which is a sustained, patient engagement with the history of doctrine. The editors have also done valuable work in adding footnotes that clarify some obscure points or references in the text. In an \"Introduction\" written for A.M.B.S. bookstore publication in 1981, Yoder makes it clear that he is serious about theology and does not accept the modern subjectivization of theological judgments. Instead, he writes, \"... it is our duty to come to terms with the existence of a solid and sizable body of tradition: a host of terms whose precise definition makes a difference, a wealth of experience with ideas whose validity is not strictly correlated with whether they happen to turn me on or not, and a story of both intellectual combat and consensus that challenges our capacity for insight and empathy in the most creative cross-cultural research.\" (43) No one is a more capable practitioner of this kind of research. Preface is a workbook, and is most profitably read as such. Most chapters begin with a \"preparation guide,\" which may consist of questions about assigned scriptures, or questions about the \"supplementary readings\" in systematic theology textbooks that his students were required to read alongside Preface. Part 1 of the book is a sketch of the development of Christology in the New Testament. Part 2 is a study of the post-apostolic development of canon, forms of ecclesial authority and creeds. In Part 3 Yoder deals with eschatology, atonement and revelation, using the conventional format developed by the Reformed tradition of addressing the work of Christ under the headings of King, Priest and Prophet. It is noteworthy that Yoder's treatment of the New Testament begins with a study of Acts and the apostolic kerygma. This should lay to rest the misunderstanding that Yoder really operates on the basis of a \"historical Jesus\" hermeneut","PeriodicalId":83183,"journal":{"name":"The Mennonite quarterly review","volume":"11 1","pages":"456"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86111475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urbana: University of Illinois Press. 1995. Pp. xvii + 229. $34.95. This volume continues the significant string of publications authored or edited by Richard T. Hughes of Pepperdine University. As in other publications, Hughes narrates his first encounter with the complex of ideas summed up in the terms primitivism, restoration and restitution which were introduced to him as a student by his mentor Everett Ferguson through the medium of Franklin H. Littell's prizewinning The Anabaptist View of the Church (1952). That book, published in revised form in 1958 and reissued in 1964 as The Origins of Sectarian Protestantism, contended that the essence of the Anabaptist genius was Christian primitivism, based on a conviction that Christianity had experienced a grievous fall and required a restitution \"of the life and virtue of the Early Church.\" Because of Hughes' own grounding in a restorationist movement--the Churches of Christ--he found personal as well as academic enlightenment in the concept and has devoted much of his academic career to demonstrating its importance for a wide range of Christian experience in America. Among the publications written by Hughes over the years were articles published in MQR (1971) and elsewhere comparing Anabaptist restitutionism with that of the Campbellite movement. Hughes planned and carried out a conference in 1975 to explore the restitution of primitive Christianity; although no book issued from it, many of the papers were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion (1976). Hughes also organized a significant conference ten years later (1985); those proceedings were published in the well received volume, The American Quest for the Primitive Church (1988). The book under review is a comparable publication, derived from a conference held in 1991 at Pepperdine University. As in earlier conferences, the editor was able to recruit an outstanding roster of scholars that includes many of the leading interpreters of American religious experience such as Martin E. Marty, George Marsden and Franklin H. Littell. With informed nuance and sophistication, contributors to this book explore the varied perspectives on primitivism held by active American denominations and movements, ranging from Fundamentalism through Pentecostalism, the Latter-day Saints, the Churches of Christ, Wesleyan/Holiness bodies and others, to the Mennonites. While differing in interpretive stance, all contributors agree that the concept of primitivism is critically important for understanding the faith orientation of American Christians, particularly but not exclusively of those sometimes described as sectarian. Of particular interest to readers of MQR will be the essays by John Howard Yoder and Theron F. Schlabach. Assigned the topic \"Primitivism in the Radical Reformation: Strengths and Weaknesses,\" Yoder characteristically begins by questioning the assumptions behi","PeriodicalId":83183,"journal":{"name":"The Mennonite quarterly review","volume":"17 1","pages":"317"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91287576","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
