In the deals that result, the talk is largely about stock value and the interests of investors. The larger public-interest question of how the conversion will affect the health of community members often receives short shift. Most recently, Triad, an HCA spin-off, has emerged as a major player in the market for faltering nonprofits, zeroing in on institutions all the way from Alaska to North Carolina, and this has advocates worried, because the company can be singularly insensitive to community health care needs. But Triad is also remarkably adept at winning public favor.
