The swelling behaviornand the mechanical properties were observed to depend on both thendegree of methacrylation and the alginate molecular weight. Due tonthe chain entanglement present in high-viscosity sodium alginate,nlower degrees of modification were required to tune the hydrogel properties.nMoreover, in the presence of Ca<sup>2+</sup>, secondary cross-linkingnwas introduced by the coordination of the alginate guluronate moietiesnwith the Ca<sup>2+</sup> ions. The addition of this secondary cross-linkingncaused fast volume shrinkage and a reinforcement of the mechanicalnproperties. The secondary cross-linking was reversible, and the hydrogelsnregained their original shape for at least three cycles. Additionally,nthe dual cross-linked network can be used to induce adhesion betweennhydrogels and serve as a building block for self-folding actuators.","PeriodicalId":523772,"journal":{"name":"Figshare","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1753-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147921736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
