However, both environmental variability and fundamentalnmolecular noise can cause biochemical oscillators to lose coherence.nOne solution to maintaining coherence is entrainment, where an externalnsignal provides a cue that resets the phase of the oscillators. Innthis work, we study the entrainment of gene networks by a queueingninteraction established by competition between proteins for a commonnproteolytic pathway. Principles of queueing entrainment are investigatednfor an established synthetic oscillator in Escherichiancoli. We first explore this theoretically using anstandard chemical reaction network model and a map-based model, bothnof which suggest that queueing entrainment can be achieved throughnpulsatile production of an additional protein competing for a commonndegradation pathway with the oscillator proteins. We then use a combinationnof microfluidics and fluorescence microscopy to verify that pulsentrains modulating the production rate of a fluorescent protein targetednto the same protease (ClpXP) as the synthetic oscillator can entrainnthe oscillator.","PeriodicalId":522919,"journal":{"name":"Figshare","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147906184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
