The amplification ofnthe optical near field produced by collective electron excitationsnplasmons in nanostructured metal surfaces gives risento a dramatic increase by many orders of magnitude in the Raman scatteringnintensities from neighboring molecules. This effect strongly dependsnon the detailed geometry and composition of the plasmon-supportingnmetallic structures. However, the search for optimized SERS substratesnhas largely relied on empirical data, due in part to the complexitynof the structures, whose simulation becomes prohibitively demanding.nIn this work, we use state-of-the-art electromagnetic computationntechniques to produce predictive simulations for a wide range of nanoparticle-basednSERS substrates, including realistic configurations consisting ofnrandom arrangements of hundreds of nanoparticles with various morphologies.nThis allows us to derive rules of thumb for the influence of particlenanisotropy and substrate coverage on the obtained SERS enhancementnand optimum spectral ranges of operation. Our results provide a solidnbackground to understand and design optimized SERS substrates.","PeriodicalId":522475,"journal":{"name":"Figshare","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147897661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
