However, its practical viabilitynis seriously challenged by membrane wetting, fouling, and scalingnissues arising from the complex components of hypersaline wastewater.nIt remains extremely difficult to overcome all three challenges atnthe same time. Herein, a nanocomposite hydrogel engineered Janus membranenhas been facilely constructed for desired wetting/fouling/scaling-freenproperties, where a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composite hydrogelnlayer is formed in situ atop a microporous hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylenen(PTFE) substrate intermediated by an adhesive layer. By the synergiesnof the elevated membrane liquid entry pressure, inhibited surfactantndiffusion, and highly hydratable surface imparted by the hydrogel/CNCn(HC) layer, the resultant HC-PTFE membrane exhibits robust resistancento surfactant-induced wetting and oil fouling during 120 h of MD operation.nMeanwhile, owing to the dense and hydroxyl-abundant surface, it isncapable of mitigating gypsum scaling and scaling-induced wetting,nresulting in a high normalized flux and low distillate conductivitynat a concentration factor of 5.2. Importantly, the HC-PTFE membranenenables direct desalination of real hypersaline wastewater containingnbroad-spectrum foulants with stable vapor flux and robust salt rejectionn(99.90%) during long-term operation, demonstrating its great potentialnfor wastewater management in industrial scenarios.","PeriodicalId":522266,"journal":{"name":"Figshare","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147894355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
