A series of modified membranes with special wettabilitynhave been widely used for separating oil/water mixtures and emulsions.nHowever, these membranes still face challenges such as the detachmentnof the modified coatings and membrane fouling. Here, a freestandingnbiobased superwetting nanofibrous membrane for oil/water mixture separationnwas electrospun with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) asnprecursors, followed by chemical cross-linking and in situ growthnof β-FeOOH nanoparticles on the surface. Moreover, by preciselyncontrolling both the cross-linking time between CS and PVA and thengrowth time of β-FeOOH nanoparticles, the nanosize aperturesnand rough structures on the membrane surface can be regulated towardna wide range of oil/water separation scenarios. As a result, FeOOH@CS/PVA-4–12ndemonstrated superwettability, with a water contact angle of 9.5 ±n3.5° in air and an underwater–oil contact angle aboven140°, achieving a separation efficiency of 98.5% and a waternpermeation flux of 2350 L·m<sup>–2</sup>·h<sup>–1</sup> for <i>n</i>-heptane/water mixtures. The membrane FeOOH@CS/PVA-24–24nexhibited exceptional oil-in-water emulsion separation performancenwith a separation efficiency of up to 99.9% for water/<i>n</i>-heptane emulsions. Additionally, the membrane exhibited remarkablenantifouling properties, attributed to its superwetting surface andnthe photocatalytic ability of β-FeOOH nanoparticles. After fivenphotocatalytic self-cleaning cycles, the water permeation flux andnseparation efficiency remained almost unchanged, demonstrating itsngreat potential for practical application.","PeriodicalId":522186,"journal":{"name":"Figshare","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147893111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
