This paper examines the relationship between violent extremism, politics, and chieftaincy conflicts in Ghana's North East region. It attempts to see if there is any linkage or connection between or among the three variables in the context of conflict and security along the two West African countries' borders (Ghana and Togo). Edward Azar's (1990) Protracted Conflict Theory (PCT), later emphasized by Bat-Tal (2000), guided the study. This study posits that politics and chieftaincy conflicts are the primary causes of violent extremism. In this regard, the study seeks the opinions, views, and experiences of the people in the Chereponi district, especially the communities along the Ghana-Togo borders. The study adopted an exploratory research design with a blend of experts' and non-experts' perspectives in the North East Region of Ghana and a few communities in Togo. The experts are spread across five regions of Northern Ghana, whereas the non-experts are concentrated in the Chereponi district. Twenty (20) respondents were interviewed face-to-face. The study found that the two major political parties (NPP and NDC) in Ghana were more involved in promoting the interests of some chiefs for political expediency. It found no link between politics and chieftaincy, leading to violent extremism. The study concludes that there is a clear link between politics and the chieftaincy institution in Ghana, but it also establishes that the Ghana-Togo border is free of extremist activities. It recommends a strong collaboration between Ghana and Togo in the fight against insecurity and possible acts of violent extremism along their borders.","PeriodicalId":518291,"journal":{"name":"African Quarterly Social Science Review","volume":"115 44","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141666812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indiscipline is a major challenge facing schools in Kenya and it comes in many forms such as fights among students, truancy, drug abuse, dropout from schools and drop in academic performance and the problem is major challenges facing schools in Kenya. The government has recommended robust interventions at the school level to control the indiscipline. Nevertheless, students continue to exhibit immense behavioural problems. It is therefore necessary to assess the effectiveness of the numerous behaviour change interventions put in place. This study investigated the influence of school-based behaviour change interventions on students’ discipline in public secondary schools in Kiambu County. The study was guided by the following four objectives; to explore the influence of teacher counselling interventions on discipline among public secondary school students in Kiambu County, Kenya; to examine the influence of student peer counselling interventions on discipline among public secondary school students in Kiambu County, Kenya; to assess the influence of mentorship interventions on discipline among public secondary school students in Kiambu County, Kenya and; to determine the influence of disciplinary actions on discipline among public secondary school students in Kiambu County, Kenya. The study was centred on the Ecological Systems Theory (EST). Based on the correlational research design, the study targeted the 227 principals 3,479 guidance and counselling teachers and the 89,065 students in Kiambu County. From these, the study sampled 23 principals, 97 teachers and 398 students using the simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview guides, and field observation schedules. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics in line with the study objectives.  On quantitative data from the questionnaires; frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were used. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) aided in data analysis. The null hypothesis was tested using inferential statistics where, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r) test was used at a significance level of 0.05. Qualitative data from open-ended questions in the questionnaires, interview guides, and secondary data transcripts were analyzed using content analysis procedures. The findings showed that there was evidence of positive and significant relationship between students’ discipline and; school discipline actions (r=0.599, p<0.05). Based on these findings, it is evident that school discipline actions indeed influence students’ discipline in the study area. Interventions around these areas should thus be strengthened to holistically enhance students’ discipline in the schools studied. The study recommends that school disciplinary actions should be well regulated to make them responsive to the punishment needs of schools. The Ministry of Education should regular","PeriodicalId":518291,"journal":{"name":"African Quarterly Social Science Review","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141683940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings show that the issue of teen pregnancy is of great concern in the county of Mombasa.  This is evidenced by the high rate of school dropout among girls who got pregnant, early motherhood, transmission of venereal diseases, cases of abortion and death after abortion in some cases. Pearson correlation shows that family stability (0.006, P>0.05) and school based interventions (r=0.063, p>.05) did not have significant effects on the management of teenage pregnancy. On the other hand, the regression coefficients shows that religious interventions could statistically predict the management of teenage pregnancy (P values <0.05). Furthermore, government interventions had a statistically significant moderating influence on the relationship between ecological transformative social change strategies and the management of teenage pregnancy. As a result, the government interventions are urgently needed to address teenage pregnancy in Mombasa County. There is need to put measures in place aimed at checking teenage pregnancies and their associated consequences such as abortions, girls dropping out of school as well as early marriages among others. There is also need to strengthen the contribution of families and school interventions in curbing teenage pregnancy. Civil society organizations, role models and other targeted community based interventions should be carried out to advocate for changes that could lead to reduction in teenage pregnancy among girls. The government in its capacity should be at the centre of ecological transformative social change strategies and the management of teenage pregnancy in Mombasa County.","PeriodicalId":518291,"journal":{"name":"African Quarterly Social Science Review","volume":" 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141370607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a study conducted in 2018, an estimated 45–50% of alcohol-abusing youth in Kiambu County had post-traumatic stress disorder. The main purpose of this paper is to review and synthesize existing literature articles on the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-associated alcohol abuse in Kenya’s context. The review shows that PSTD related to alcohol abuse, though not well studied in Kenya, is a real challenge facing the youth. It affects their learning processes as well as their transition to colleges and other higher education institutions. Alcohol abuse also affects employment prospects for youth and leads to impoverishment. It also challenges the productivity and entrepreneurial capacities of these youth, leading to further impoverishment and reduced socioeconomic prospects. On the basis of these findings, it is pertinent to come up with psychosocial support mechanisms for alcohol abusers suffering from PSTD. The government should establish funding strategies for the rehabilitation of PSTD-affected youth. Also, government empowerment programs in Kenya should factor in mechanisms for ensuring that youth with PSTD-related alcohol abuse can access funding to enhance their socioeconomic status.","PeriodicalId":518291,"journal":{"name":"African Quarterly Social Science Review","volume":"47 206","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140708507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the quality of the social support system and drug use among street children in Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya, utilizing a correlational research design. Data were gathered from 100 street children through cluster and simple random sampling methods, selected from a target population of 30,000 in Starehe Sub-County. Additionally, information was collected from purposively sampled officials, including four from the Starehe Children's Office, eight from NGOs/FBOs operating in the sub-county, one sub-county administrator, and four ward administrators. Quantitative data collected via questionnaires underwent analysis using descriptive statistics such as means, percentages, and frequencies. The findings indicated that a lack of social connectedness in the streets contributed to substance use among street children. Strengthening existing social support systems was identified as a means for providing street children with the necessary support to steer them away from drug use. The study recommends the promotion of social support systems in Starehe Sub-County and emphasizes the importance of providing homes for street children to reduce exposure to stressful conditions that may lead to mental health problems.","PeriodicalId":518291,"journal":{"name":"African Quarterly Social Science Review","volume":"48 2-3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140531530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
