This article traces the history of a particularly sophisticated form of polite criticism that refers to the facts worthy of criticism only indirectly, in a generalizing gesture, and often metaphorically. Primarily an element of learned conversation, this kind of communication occurs also in courtly contexts in the High and Late Middle Ages – e. g. in the courtly novel (Hartmann von Aue’s Iwein et al.) and in Engelbert of Admont’s instructions for cultivated behavior in the manner of a lord. Contrary to assumptions in current research literature, however, in neither case does this mode of communication reflect a new linguistic ideal to be learned by the readers for appropriate courtly behavior. Instead, it remains closely tied to the authors’ learned habitus.","PeriodicalId":514584,"journal":{"name":"Internationales Archiv für Sozialgeschichte der deutschen Literatur","volume":"2004 15","pages":"122 - 137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141401237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper substantiates this assumption through a comparison of two episodes in Heinrich von Veldeke’s Eneasroman, in which gifts are circulated and protagonists communicate nonverbally through acts of giving. Gifts, as communication media, appear predisposed to establish and preserve courtliness as objects of materialized politeness, guarding against potential loss of face. Gifts thus have agency, as they appear to initiate and determine actions.","PeriodicalId":514584,"journal":{"name":"Internationales Archiv für Sozialgeschichte der deutschen Literatur","volume":"21 1","pages":"149 - 165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141403810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that the notion of courteous, “polite” behavior remains fundamentally linked throughout the medieval and early modern periods to the desire to synthesize social and religious claims. While in Thomasin and Castiglione the idea of “pleasing God and the world” is based on an essentially neo-Platonic aesthetic, the Habsburg court and its texts display a pious theological interpretation of the motif with a move toward Passion mysticism.","PeriodicalId":514584,"journal":{"name":"Internationales Archiv für Sozialgeschichte der deutschen Literatur","volume":"11 4","pages":"100 - 121"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141397112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
