They are fungi widely present in nature but may also be related to nosocomial infections. We present four cases of mucormycosis identified through histopathological analysis and involving the rhino-sinus region. All the cases were related to decompensated diabetes mellitus. Among these patients, two of them had lesions that affected their eyes and central nervous system (CNS). Although there were no fatalities, the two patients with ocular and CNS lesions experienced severe complications, including loss of vision and definitive chronic renal failure. \u0000KEY WORDS: Mucormycosis; Covid-19; Sars-cov-2; diabetes mellitus; rhino-orbital.

This is an ecological, descriptive, retrospective study, with quantitative and qualitative data on the mosquito fauna collected in 10 areas. A total of 2,787 Culicidae were collected and allocated in 8 genera and 23 species. Of the total specimens captured, 2,341 (84%) were females and 446 males (16%). Haemagogus janthinomys occurred in 2.7% (74) of the cases and Haemagogus leucocelaenus in 4.5% (125); Sabethes chlropterus occurred in 0.1% (3) of the cases, Sabethes albiprivus in 1% (28), and Sabethes glaucodaemon in 0.3% (8); Aedes aegypti occurred in 19.7% (548) and Aedes albopictus in 3.9% (108) of the cases. The Sa. glaucodaemon species was recorded for the first time in Goiânia. Yellow fever infection was not detected in the collected specimens. We conclude that the presence of wild vectors, in addition to potential urban vectors, enabled the classification of receptive and vulnerable areas to the circulation of the yellow fever virus. \u0000KEYWORDS: Entomological surveillance; vector mosquitoes; epizootics; yellow fever.

In this context, we are reporting a bed bug infestation in a surgical ward in Brazil. Thirteen patients in the surgical ward were identified as having diffuse erythematous maculopapular lesions of unknown origin. Similar signs and symptoms were observed among healthcare professionals in the same unit. The issue was addressed with all relevant departments, and a multifaceted approach was adopted to manage the infestation. Bed bugs may potentially pose health risks to both patients and healthcare professionals. It is imperative to actively monitor the structural integrity of the hospital’s physical facilities to prevent arthropod infestations. \u0000KEY WORDS: Bed bugs; Cimex lectularius; ectoparasitic infestations; hospitals.

Fecal samples were processed using the modified Ritchie and Ziehl-Neelsen staining methods. Analysis of the risk factors, using Tukey test and Odds ratio (OR), was obtained by connecting questionnaires with parasitological results. Of the 414 schoolchildren analyzed, 32.4% (134) were positive for at least one enteroparasite species. The most prevalent were Blastocystis spp. (21.7%), Entamoeba coli (5.5%), Endolimax nana (5.5%), Giardia duodenalis (3.9%), Trichuris trichiura (3.7%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (2.9%). Schoolchildren from rural areas had a higher occurrence of enteric parasites (p<0.05), showing that is necessary to continue with health education, being careful with the food, basic sanitation and parasitological examination of feces before treatment. \u0000KEY WORDS: Enteroparasites; monoparasitism; multiparasitism; children; socio-echonomic factors.

These nematodes have low host specificity and zoonotic potential, affecting the liver of their hosts. The objective of this work is to describe the first case, as far as the authors are aware, of C. hepaticum causing granulomatous hepatitis in captive Mandrillus sphinx. A necroscopic examination was performed and the organs were removed and evaluated; then, 1 cm³ fragments were collected and preserved in 10% buffered formalin. After fixation, the samples were submitted to histotechnical processing to make histological slides. At macroscopic examination, the liver showed heterogeneous red surface with light brown and whitish areas distributed throughout the parenchyma, with diverse punctiform structures measuring 1 to 3 mm in diameter. Histopathology revealed abundant multifocal granulomas with fibrosis and bioperculated barrel-shaped eggs, typical of C. hepaticum. Artificial tissue digestion of the liver was performed and the morphometric measurements of the parasite were as follows: 0.054 ± 0.002 mm in length, 0.031 ± 0.008 mm in width, wall thickness of 0.004 ± 0.0007 mm and opercula of 0.006 ± 0.001 mm. Parasitism was not the cause of death, but an incidental finding. However, further investigations are essential to choose control and prevention measures to prevent the infection of other animal groups and even humans. \u0000KEY WORDS: Nematoda; parasitism; primates; zoo medicine; wildlife pathology.

Multiple factors are related to KS pathogenesis. The interleukin-23 (IL-23) is an immunomodulatory cytokine with pro-carcinogenic role. The aim of this study was to evaluate the detection of IL-23 in cutaneous lesions of patients with KS classic and KS-AIDS. This was a cross-sectional study conducted at the public Hospital in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. This study included 13 biopsies of patients which presented KS with histopathological confirmation. For detection of IL-23, the immunohistochemical analysis was made with monoclonal antibody anti-IL-23. The immunostaining for IL-23 in biopsies was positive in 61.5% (8/13) of cases. Of seven lesions classified as patch-stage, three were positive for IL-23 (42.8%); two of three samples classified as plaque-stage were positive for IL-23 (66.7%); all the nodular-stage lesions were positive for IL-23. The positivity found in KS-AIDS lesions was 66.7% (6/9) and KS classic 50% (2/4). Our data supports the concept that IL-23 might be a pro-carcinogenic mediator, detected in KS lesions, probably favoring the progression of the tumor. \u0000KEY WORDS: Sarcoma; Kaposi; interleukin-23; tumor microenvironment. \u0000
