For the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy, a high level of adherence is required. This study therefore seeks to assess the adherence level and the influence of its determinants in HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy at the Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) HIV clinic in Ishaka, Uganda. Quantitative cross-section study approach was conducted to assess the factors associated with adherence to a-ntiretroviral therapy among HIV patients at KIUTH in Ishaka, Uganda. Data was collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire in 150 respondents in this study. The qualitative data collected was statistically analysed and documented using Microsoft Excel and Word version 2019, which were then analyzed. The analysed data was presented in the form of tables and graphs, which formed the basis for discussion and conclusion. Of a total of 150 clients interviewed, equal proportions of 26% were in the age groups of 40–49 and 50–59 years, with a mean age of 46 years. The majority (65%) were female, with most (45%) being Anglicans, followed by Catholics (32%), Muslims (14%), and other religions (9%). Nearly half (45.1%) of the respondents were married. About 7% had tertiary education, while 37% had completed the ordinary level of high school. Nearly half (47%) knew the name of the ART they were taking, while 17% did not. Less than a third (26.7%) did not know the name of the ART drug they were taking. A large proportion (93%) stated that ART prevents mother-to-child transmission of infection, while 7% reported that they did not know. Nearly all (96%) respondents knew HIV could be controlled by ART. The majority (87%) stated that taking ART prevents disease progression, and 63% opined that missing ART drugs can lead to transmission of the disease. Overall, adherence to ART was 39% while non-adherence was 61%. In conclusion, the study discovered a high degree of awareness but a low level of adherence to ART among patients living with HIV. Forgetfulness, financial level, employment status, and knowledge of the benefits of the intervention are all important factors in nonadherence among some HIV patients. As a result, ART clinics should increase the level of education provided to customers to encourage patients to take complete responsibility for their health status. Malaria infection during pregnancy is a significant public health problem with substantial risks for the pregnant woman, her fetus, and the newborn child. In Uganda, the overall burden of malaria is high, and its adverse outcomes for the infected mother and the unborn child are widespread. This study was designed to assess the prevalence of malaria in pregnancy and its associated factors among pregnant women presenting at the antenatal clinic in Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted. The study was conducted in the antenatal clinic of Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, in the Hoima district of Western Uganda from from February 2022 to April 2022. A sample size of 204 was used. Data was coded and entered into IBM SPSS version 25. Data was then analyzed and the Chi-square test and logistic regression were done to find the associated factors of malaria in pregnancy at a 95% confidence interval. Results shows that the prevalence of malaria in pregnant women attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital was 17.6%. This study showed that pregnant women remain particularly vulnerable to malaria and that the prevalence of malaria in pregnant women attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital is high. Therefore, seminars and media education programmes should be started or put in place to educate women on the risk of malaria during pregnancy. Girl child education should be promoted by the government, as educated women are associated with a lower of malaria during pregnancy. While its nutritional value is significant, the inherent nature of milk also makes it an ideal environment for the proliferation of microorganisms, some of which lead to human illnesses, while others contribute to the spoilage of milk, making it unsafe for consumption. This research therefore aimed to assess the bacterial contamination content in raw milk, UHT and yoghurt, a total of 36 samples were gathered from various retailers, markets and supermarkets across Mbarara city. Contaminated milk and its products are accountable for human dairy related illnesses. This cross-sectional study was conducted to assess micro bacterial contamination and the presence of selected milk-borne zoonotic pathogens. The study involved 36 samples of milk and milk products mainly raw milk, UHT, or processed milk and yoghurt. Laboratory analysis conducted included Total Plate Count (TPC), Yeasts and molds (YM), staphylococcus, salmonella and coliform, as well as detection of Escherichia coli (E coli), biochemical tests including gram staining were employed to isolate and identify bacteria in these samples. The findings indicated the presence of these types of bacteria in raw milk, Staphylococcus spp (25%), Salmonella spp (33.3%), YM (41.6%), TPC (50%), coliforms (33.3%) and E.coli (25%), for UHT milk the percentage was Staphylococcus spp (0%), Salmonella spp (16.6%), YM (8.3%), TPC(16.6%), coliforms (16.6%) and E.coli (8.3%), finally for yoghurt the results were Staphylococcus spp (8.3%), Salmonella spp (8.3%), YM (16.6%), TPC (25%), coliforms (16.6%) and E.coli (0%). In conclusion, the detection of microbial contamination in raw milk and milk products suggests inadequate sanitary practices and poor storage practices. Products that are contaminated by these pathogenic organisms when consumed may result in food poisoning and a proper awareness among the stakeholders and consumers regarding possible outcomes of consuming contaminated food items is necessary. keywords: Milk, Yoghurt, Food poisoning, Microorganisms, Contamination","PeriodicalId":512001,"journal":{"name":"INOSR APPLIED SCIENCES","volume":" 68","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141671305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Promoting family is one of the main targets to reach the SDGs, and timely achievement of family planning targets is expected to accelerate achievement across the 5 SDG themes of people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. Despite the enormous benefits of family planning services, the uptake of the service remains low Uganda. This has resulted in high rates of unwanted pregnancies, unplanned deliveries, unsafe abortions, and maternal mortalities in Uganda. Several factors play an important role in the use of contraceptives among women of childbearing age. The identification of these factors is crucial to the planning and implementation of a suitable family planning programme. The study was designed to determine the factors associated with the utilisation of family planning among women of reproductive age (15–49) attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Western Uganda. This was a hospital-based cross-sectional study. Quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were utilised to collect data from 251 participants. From the results of the study majority, 182(72.5%) had never used family planning services and 68 (27.5%) had ever used family planning services. Therefore, the level of utilizing family planning services was found to be 27.5%. Thus, the level of utilisation of family planning services among women of reproductive age (15–49) attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Western Uganda, was low, which is significantly associated with the education level and perceived skills of health workers. There is a need to promote and effectively implement policies in support of girls’ education to increase FP service utilisation. The use of antenatal care from trained providers is crucial to monitor pregnancy and reduce morbidity and mortality risks for both mother and child during pregnancy and delivery. A prospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among health workers in five health Centre IVs in Jinja district, eastern Uganda. The study found that only 17.65% of antenatal care services were implemented fairly. Factors influencing successful implementation included service duration above five years, formal training on implementing guidelines and having facility interventions in place. Factors such as seeing 30 or fewer antenatal clients on each clinic day, not attending antenatal reproductive health training, not having knowledge of antenatal care guidelines, and not using antenatal care guidelines also influenced successful implementation. However, these factors did not show statistical significance in logistic regression analysis. The WHO indicates that 207 million people are infected with malaria worldwide and of these 627,000 cases result in deaths. Children below five years are the most susceptible to malaria illness which accounts for estimated deaths of 303,000 before reaching age five globally and 292,000 occur in the Africa region. The general objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of malaria and the associated factors among children below 5 years in Fort Portal Town, kabarole district. The study also aimed at determining the socio-economic demographic, caretaker, household, and environment associated with malaria prevalence within the defined age group. The study employed quantitative and qualitative research designs where questionnaires and interview guides were used to collect data from the field. All data was grouped and analyzed in a statistical way where data was presented in tables showing frequencies and percentages. The prevalence of malaria was high 204 (53%) and the factors that were significant with malaria prevalence included; household sources of light and environmental factors about the presence of garbage heaps. The prevalence of malaria was high and it was influenced by the household source of light and garbage heaps around the homes. This study recommended that caretakers should not stop knowing malaria prevention transmission, but should have a positive attitude toward implementing the preventive measures. Health unit workers, community health workers, and VHTs together with stakeholders should put in more effort to ensure that information about malaria is communicated to the caretakers in languages best understood and should mainly target the vulnerable households in the community.
