We address a clear gap: existing work measures downstream outcomes (footprints/handprints) or offers generic behavioral tools, but lacks a map from identifiable antecedents—biases, ownership frames, norms, trust, skills, and access—to adoption of repair, reuse, sharing, and product-service systems. We define the circular brainprint as the cognitive–social–educational infrastructure that raises the probability of these choices and makes them persistent. Building on a structured narrative synthesis across psychology, behavioral economics, and sustainability education, the article derives testable propositions that connect micro-mechanisms and meso-level supports to specific circular options. Education features as a lever that reconfigures antecedents—building skills and perceived control, shifting descriptive/injunctive norms, and strengthening provider trust—rather than as awareness alone. We outline measurable indicators (e.g., repair/reuse rates, refurbished share, PSS uptake) that operationalize the brainprint and enable policy design. Correction note (13 January 2026): The wording of the funding statement was updated to reflect the current mandatory formulation required by the European Commission. The funding source and scholarly content of the article remain unchanged.","PeriodicalId":511397,"journal":{"name":"Circular Economy","volume":"3 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://circulareconomyjournal.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Bourdin_From_Carbon_Footprint_to_Circular_Brainprint_JoCE_2025.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147896369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In its current implementation, this approach is effective in keeping wooden materials in circulation. However, a significant amount of material still reaches the end-of-life stage through incineration prematurely, constituting a considerable waste of valuable resources. Therefore, we propose repurposing low-quality, low-engineered waste wood for architectural applications to avoid unnecessary downcycling processes. Specifically, we suggest a digital design and fabrication method to build tectonic structures using repurposed timber offcuts. As a case study, we present a pavilion structure built at a 1:1 scale, demonstrating the potential of digital technologies for circular timber construction. Based on this case study, we discuss how digital fabrication and material grading can foster a transition towards a circular built environment.","PeriodicalId":511397,"journal":{"name":"Circular Economy","volume":"471 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140787986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Development of an Assessment Model for Measuring Mechanical Engineering Companies’ Circularity and Maturity Levels","authors":"Fabian Holly, Clemens Schild, Sebastian Schlund","doi":"10.55845/xupf2540","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.55845/xupf2540","url":null,"abstract":"The circular economy has gained significance in recent years due to its potential to achieve economic benefits and address ecological challenges. Mechanical engineering companies face the challenge of transitioning to a circular economy, which offers advantages like improved resource utilisation, reduced dependence on external suppliers, and enhanced production and supply chain efficiency. However, implementing circular economy principles proves difficult for manufacturing firms. Measuring circularity poses significant challenges, necessitating assessing methods' development, application, and validation. Industry-specific key indicators and data quality assurance are crucial in this regard. Existing models struggle to adapt to diverse contexts and industries. The outcome of this paper is the C-METRIC (Circular Manufacturing Evaluation and Rating for Industrial Circularity), an industry-specific method for assessing mechanical engineering companies' circularity and maturity level, developed using the Design-Science-Research Methodology. Based on the circular value chain, the method evaluates the maturity and circularity levels of the focused sector through 66 specific questions in 33 different areas of the company. The results are divided into the maturity and circularity levels of value-adding and strategic processes and are visualised using spider diagrams. The purpose of this model is to survey the circularity and circular economy maturity of mechanical engineering companies of specific regions and sectors.","PeriodicalId":511397,"journal":{"name":"Circular Economy","volume":"68 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140087171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is considered vital to capturing relevant information. This study uses a constructive research method to assess BIM support for effectively capturing circularity-related information. We identified circularity needs and transcribed them into actionable, machine-interpretable form, applying the novel Information Delivery Specification (IDS) standard. Considered use cases include material composition, quality and identity, environmental impacts, and disassembly aspects. We discuss the benefits, challenges, and suitability of modelling such information based on the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema. The developed IDS specification allows for semi-automated compliance checking of BIM content. Most considered aspects can be expressed in BIM but often lack consistent terminology. Difficult to document are disassembly instructions and elements’ connections. Discussed technical limitations help rationalise the amount of information reasonable to capture in BIM. The study bridges the gap between sustainability expert demand for data and BIM deliverables. Resultant knowledge enables practitioners to increase the availability of quality data relevant for future building disassembly, reuse or adaptation.","PeriodicalId":511397,"journal":{"name":"Circular Economy","volume":"8 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140091086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this literature and industry scoping review is to analyze the current construction industry in the United States to determine emerging trends and developments in sustainable and circular design and construction, focusing on one of the concepts, Urban Mining, and its potential applications. In the context of this paper, Urban Mining is defined as the reclamation of materials, elements or components from existing decommissioned buildings which were not designed for deconstruction or adaptability with the goal to reuse (or recycle) these elements in new construction projects. As this paper provides an outlook on technologies, materials, and practices that are emerging, there is a gap in available literature (reviewed or scientific sources) on the selected topic. Market reports, case study reports, and/or governmental and company websites are used to identify legislation, stakeholders, and changing practices pertinent to Urban Mining. By synthesizing deconstruction prospects for material groups and building components, gaps in Urban Mining practices are identified, including the documentation of building components, processing tools for reclaimed material, and technological, logistical, and legal infrastructures for reuse.","PeriodicalId":511397,"journal":{"name":"Circular Economy","volume":"5 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140407575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing Scientific Production Performance Analysis and Network and Cluster Analysis, this research explores key dimensions such as authorship, sources, countries, institutions, and keywords. The findings revealed a growing body of literature focusing on the link between circular economy and tourism, although this connection is in its early stages. From circular economy perspective, waste management and recycling dimensions emerge as the most prominent aspects contributing to the discourse in tourism studies. Conversely, from the tourism perspective, nearly all facets of tourism concepts appear receptive to a circular economy, regardless of whether the studies pertain to tourism development or management. In conclusion, this study enriches our scholarly understanding of how circular economy principles intersect with tourism. It guides researchers toward key areas of interest, shaping future exploration for this dynamic scientific relationship.","PeriodicalId":511397,"journal":{"name":"Circular Economy","volume":"61 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140087083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
