Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most prevalent form of allergy, and lung cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer with the highest mortality rate. Recent studies have reported a positive association between asthma and lung cancer; however, this association is inconclusive. Furthermore, AR is positively associated with asthma; therefore, our research question was to explore whether there is any correlation between AR and lung cancer epidemiologically. Methods: After a rigorous search of PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, 7 eligible articles were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, including 4724 cases and 9059 controls, 5 from the USA, and one each from Canada and Germany. Results: Pooled analysis (OR, 0.55; 95% CI: 0.45–0.68; P value < .00001) showed a strong inverse relationship between AR and lung cancer. Conclusion: The current meta-analysis suggests an inverse relationship between AR and lung cancer; however, new epidemiological studies are required to observe the current scenario more comprehensively.","PeriodicalId":508590,"journal":{"name":"Medicine","volume":"12 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140962944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent evidence suggests malnutrition and renal dysfunction are associated with poor outcome. This study aimed to develop a prognostic model incorporating prognostic nutritional index (PNI), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and other parameters to predict mortality risk. This retrospective analysis included 155 elderly patients with severe COVID-19. Clinical data and outcomes were collected. Logistic regression analyzed independent mortality predictors. A joint predictor “L” incorporating PNI, eGFR, D-dimer, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was developed and internally validated using bootstrapping. Decreased PNI (OR = 1.103, 95% CI: 0.78–1.169), decreased eGFR (OR = 0.964, 95% CI: 0.937–0.992), elevated D-dimer (OR = 1.001, 95% CI: 1.000–1.004), and LDH (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.001–1.008) were independent mortality risk factors (all P < .05). The joint predictor “L” showed good discrimination (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.863) and calibration. The bootstrapped area under the curve was 0.858, confirming model stability. A combination of PNI, eGFR, D-dimer, and LDH provides useful prognostic information to identify elderly patients with severe COVID-19 at highest mortality risk for early intervention. Further external validation is warranted.","PeriodicalId":508590,"journal":{"name":"Medicine","volume":"51 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140965578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regard, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of measured elasticity and the reproducibility of SWE according to the lesion size and stiffness. Two breast radiologists examined 20 targets of 4 different levels of stiffness and 5 different sizes (2.5, 4, 7, 11, and 18 mm) in a customized elasticity phantom. The B-mode image, color elastography image, and kPa measurement were obtained twice by each examiner with a 1-week interval. Inter- and intra-observer reproducibility and the accuracy of measured kPa were analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman analysis. Subgroup analysis was run to evaluate the effect of lesion size and stiffness on the reproducibility and accuracy of measured kPa. Inter- and intraobserver reproducibility for measuring kPa showed excellent agreement (ICC: 0.9742 and 0.9582; ICC: 0.9932 and 0.9294). The size and stiffness of the targets did not affect reproducibility. The overall accuracy of measured kPa was very high (ICC: 0.8049). In the subgroup analysis, targets that were ≤4 mm in size showed lower accuracy (ICC: 0.542), whereas targets that were 7 and 11 mm in size showed higher accuracy (ICC: 0.9832 and 0.9656, respectively). SWE shows excellent reproducibility regardless of lesion size or stiffness in phantom targets. The accuracy of measured kPa is high in lesions that are 7 and 11 mm in size but is low in lesions that are ≤4 mm in size.</p>","PeriodicalId":508590,"journal":{"name":"Medicine","volume":" ","pages":"e31095"},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2022-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9575830/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40320958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In terms of methods, 4 different brands of B-D test kits (devices) were tested at 4 different leakage rates, and a total of 48 experiments were conducted. The results from univariate analysis revealed that there are statistically significant differences in the judgment of test results among different personnel and brands. The results from multivariate logistic regression analysis displayed that the difference between different personnel was statistically significant (χ = 45.34, P < .001); the difference between different products was statistically significant (χ = 129.37, P < .001); and there was no statistically significant difference between different degree of leakage (χ = 6.99, P > .05). Result judgments of brand 1 and brand 2 are susceptible to subjective factors. The judgment of brand 3 is intuitive and consistent with the evaluation result of brand 4.
