After discussing the immediate context of the series in Margaret Thatcher’s Britain, it goes on to compare Cupitt’s theology with that of the radical theologians of the 1960s, especially the South Bank School including John Robinson. Against the backdrop of different theories of secularisation, it sees the theologians of the 1960s as the last representatives of a ‘national’ Christianity. In distinction, Cupitt’s emphasis on the individual will in\u0000 The Sea of Faith\u0000 is seen as much more suited to the social context of his times.\u0000

First, it will suggest that the religious realist and non-realist attitudes are representative of a spectrum of cognitive attitudes toward God rather than two polarising positions. Second, it will offer ‘thick’ and ‘thin’ forms of both attitudes, with ‘thickness’ representing the strength of metaphysical commitment. Finally, in answer to ‘what is at stake?’, the genuineness of religious non-realism and a ‘thin’ form of realism will be defended to a significant extent. Don Cupitt’s work will be commended for helping to open up the conversation and for introducing a range of authentic ways of talking and thinking about God.

It will attempt to evaluate its significance, then and now. We argue that Cupitt’s ‘radical’ reputation for his advancement of a broadly ‘non-realist’ understanding of God may have overshadowed other equally significant features, not least his central argument that unless Christianity responded constructively to modern thought it would be doomed to irrelevance. The article will close with some reflections on what Cupitt’s manifesto for religion might mean for those who continue to identify with his critiques of traditional theology today.\u0000

This article surveys some of the most important recent figures and trends in that story to assess the current state of the field. It sets out ways in which Cupitt’s attack on dualistic and dogmatic thought is strongly echoed by thinkers such as John Caputo, Richard Kearney, Catherine Keller and Grace Jantzen, and how major materialist philosophers like Slavoj Žižek still show a fascination with the emancipatory potential of Christianity. The article argues that some of Cupitt’s positions need to be challenged in the light of the contemporary ecological and metaphysical concerns of radical theology today.

In the first two sections, the poets are shown to give voice to such enduring human emotions in response to God as wonder and joy but also as sorrow and frustration, challenging us as readers to experience faith more richly and deeply. In the third section, the poets are shown to be concerned with the same fundamental questions as we are today. Their works remain powerful in their beauty, surprising in their discoveries and reassuring in their humanness before God.

By attending to poetry’s theological horizons, especially by what Michael Symmons Roberts calls poetry’s ’semi-sacred role’ and its capacity to embody silence and space, I shall suggest that it is possible to come to a richer understanding of God’s transcendent elusiveness.

The poet’s art of attention is identified as a primary tool for replacing the traditional role that religion has played in human communities and consciousness – exploring the sense of life as a gift from a transcendent source, infusing intuitions of meaning into experience and confronting us with ethical demands.
