One of the most important complications is that orchid seeds are tiny and lack endosperm, meaning they almost entirely depend on outside sources for nutrients while germinating or developing. The main objective of this review is to give a summary of the present methods being used in orchid germination, highlighting symbiotic and asymbiotic methods. Symbiotic germination requires interaction with mycorrhizal fungi, which provide the necessary nutrients and support for seedling growth. However, in asymbiotic approaches, controlled conditions are provided to promote germination by using nutrient-rich media. The article also highlights some of these advances that have taken place recently and ways that could be adopted to improve their effectiveness in the future. For example, the effectiveness and ability to grow orchids have improved due to recent developments in tissue culture and biotechnology. This study relies on applying the analytical approach to previous relevant studies on the subject. Nevertheless, further research is needed to refine these techniques and improve their usability in orchid conservation. To summarize, while significant progress has been achieved in understanding and enhancing orchid germination processes, further study and innovation are required. By resolving remaining issues and investigating new approaches, it may be possible to better assist orchid conservation and encourage the long-term cultivation of these wonderful plants.\u0000","PeriodicalId":507675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":" 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141832941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to assess the agronomic performance of improved maize varieties under different nitrogen rates to identify low nitrogen tolerant varieties. Five multiple stress-tolerant maize hybrids, developed by maize improvement program of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), and an open-pollinated variety used as check were evaluated under three levels nitrogen at two locations during 2019 growing season. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot experiment with three replications at each location. Nitrogen rates and varieties were the main and secondary factors, respectively. Data collected on grain yield and its related traits and were subjected to analysis of variance at 5% level of significance. The average grain yield of the six varieties under different nitrogen levels ranged from 2.2 t/ha at 0 kgN/ha in Angaradébou to 5.3 t/ha at 76 kgN/ha in Komkoma. Hybrid TZEEQI 342 × TZEEQI 7 showed high grain yield (4.0 t/ha) across the two agro-ecologies while varieties TZEE-W Pop STR QPM Co × TZEEQI 7 (3.7 t/ha) and TZdEEI 91 × TZEEI 21 (3.6 t/ha) had comparable grain yield. These hybrids were also less susceptible to nitrogen stress. They are the promising genotypes for Angaradébou localities while farmers around Komkoma should continue to cultivate TZEE-W Pop DT STR QPM.","PeriodicalId":507675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"14 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140421529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plant genes are subjected to alternative splicing (AS), a process increases both transcriptome and proteome diversities. The work reports a systematic genome-wide study on identification and analysis of AS events by integrating multiple sources of sequencing data in potato plants. A collection of 291,071 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and mRNA sequences were cleaned and assembled into 150,435 unique transcripts and 87,992 of them were mapped to potato genome. In addition, a total of 5.8 billion out of 7.7 billion RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) reads, which were collected from 227 samples deposited from 10 published projects, were mapped to potato genome. Combining all mapping data results in identification of a total of 226,769 AS events, which were further classified into basic events (49.0%) and complex events (51.0%), that were generated from 24,650 genes. The basic AS events include intron retention (9.5%), alternative acceptor sites (19.2%), alternative donor site (8.2%), and exon skipping (12.1%). The AS rate of annotated gene models was estimated to be ~45.8% in potato plants. Comparative analysis identified 2,929 alternatively splice genes conserved among potato, tomato, soybean and maize plants. The work provides an important resource for further functional characterization of these genes in potato biology.","PeriodicalId":507675,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139368285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
