Data on clinical files (CL type, wearing time, visual acuity, symptoms, and clinical signs) of CL wearers who attended a Spanish eye setting between 2010 and 2020 were collected. The profile of CL wearers was compared between 2010 and 2020. The CL characteristics were compared between CL types, replacements, and designs. Finally, factors predicting a change in CL fitting were assessed. Seventy-four CL wearers (28 men and 46 women) aged 39.0 ± 9.1 years old were included. Silicone hydrogel (p = 0.01) and daily disposable (p < 0.001) CL fittings increased during the follow-up period. The main reasons for CL refitting were the appearance or increase of clinical signs and/or symptoms. CL wearing time and visual acuity differed between CL types and replacements (p ≤ 0.02). Both, rigid and conventional replacement CL wear were associated with a lower probability of CL fitting changes (p ≤ 0.03). In conclusion, this study provides useful clinical information about the profile of successful long-term CL wearers in the last decade. Adequate aftercare examinations of long-term CL wearers can avoid worsening of signs and symptoms. Hydrogel and frequent replacement CL wearers are more likely to undergo CL refitting when compared to rigid corneal and conventional CL wearers.","PeriodicalId":505407,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnología para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"34 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140966466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Estudiar y describir la relación entre la oclusión de la vena central de la retina y el glaucoma neovascular, su etiología, epidemiología, fisiopatología, factores de riesgo, presentación clínica y tratamientos. Metodología. Revisión de la literatura acerca del glaucoma neovascular secundario a oclusión de la vena central de la retina, tomando artículos comprendidos entre 2014 y 2022, con criterios de exclusión artículos de series de casos. Resultados. El glaucoma neovascular (GNV) es una afectación patológica ocular, secundaria a una afección ocular y/o sistémica hipóxica que conduce a isquemia retiniana, dentro de las etiologías más comunes (33 %) se encuentra la oclusión de la vena central de la retina (OVCR) una retinopatía vascular común que puede presentarse como isquémica o no isquémica. Discusión de resultados. La OVCR ocurre secundariamente a cambios estructurales glaucomatosos o coexiste con la anormalidad hemodinámica de la retina, esta es mediada por procesos inflamatorios como consecuencia de la isquemia retiniana y la hemorragia, lo cual aumenta la expresión de factor de crecimiento endotelial vascular (VEGF) y otros factores inflamatorios en el ojo, que pueden llevar a GNV. Conclusiones. El GNV es una patología con una presentación clínica severa, se asocia de forma directa con la OVCR y tiene múltiples opciones de tratamientos.","PeriodicalId":505407,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnología para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"148 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139182663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existe una información limitada sobre el impacto de la pandemia en la realización de cirugías y la razón que obedece a dicho aumento. Objetivo: identificar el efecto de la pandemia por covid-19 en la cirugía refractiva mediante la delimitación de las principales motivaciones para la realización del procedimiento. Métodos: estudio descriptivo observacional de corte transversal, por medio de la respuesta de un cuestionario sobre aspectos sociodemográficos y motivación quirúrgica. Resultados: fueron encuestados 203 participantes entre 31 y 40 años (47,8 %, n = 97), 18 y 30 años (39,9 %, n = 81) y mayores de 40 años (12,3 %, n = 25). El 61,1 % (n = 124) fueron mujeres y solo 3 (1,5 %) residían fuera de Colombia. Participaron con mayor frecuencia personas de estrato 4 (45,5 %) y 5 (24,3 %). Las principales motivaciones fueron: considerar que era el mejor momento para la cirugía, el deseo de evitar el uso de corrección óptica como respuesta al aumento del uso de pantallas y, por último, uso del tapabocas. Conclusiones: se demostró que el uso de tapabocas durante la pandemia, y el efecto de empañar las gafas, no fue una de las motivaciones más importantes, como sí lo fue el teletrabajo, pues la flexibilidad del horario laboral facilitó la posibilidad de la realización de cirugía refractiva, dejando este motivo como una de las posibles razones por las cuales se incrementaron los procedimientos realizados durante el 2020.","PeriodicalId":505407,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnología para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"99 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139182109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, the present study examined the ability of 3 standard techniques; Von Graefe (VG), Maddox Rod (MR) and Modified Thorington (MT) tests to quantify a known change in heterophoria. Methods:The study was performed on 30 young subjects using each of the 3 procedures listed above. Near (40 cm) heterophoria was quantified both without and with an additional base-out prism. Five possible values were available, namely 2, 4, 6, 8 and 9Δ. After a period of 24 hours, the heterophoria measurement was repeated using the same technique with one of these prisms added to the refractive correction. Results:The mean heterophoria value measured before the introduction of prism using the VG procedure was significantly more exophoric than the findings obtained using the other 2 techniques (p = 0.035). No significant difference was observed between the measured and predicted change in heterophoria following the introduction of the prism for the VG and MT procedures, but a significant difference was found with the MR technique (p0.001). Conclusions:The ability to measure a known change in oculomotor deviation was significantly poorer with the MR technique, when compared with the VG and MT procedures. Given that the mean pre-prism measurement was significantly more exophoric when using the VG procedure, we recommend that MT be adopted as the technique of choice for the subjective measurement of oculomotor deviations in the clinical setting","PeriodicalId":505407,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnología para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":" 69","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141219539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
