Most grey horses will develop at least one tumour if they live long enough. Dermal melanoma and dermal melanomatosis are histologically identical, but dermal melanoma can present as either isolated single or multiple discreet lesions, while dermal melanomatosis presents as multiple coalescing lesions. These tumours are slow growing and have a predilection for the base of the tail, perineum, prepuce, parotid salivary gland and commissures of the lips. This report describes 980‐nm diode laser photothermal ablation as a non‐invasive treatment for equine dermal melanoma.To report the results of a series of horses that underwent laser photothermal ablation of equine dermal melanomas with a 980‐nm diode therapy laser.Retrospective case series.Horses were sedated for a standing procedure and restrained in stocks. A thermocouple needle was inserted deep to/into each lesion and the laser was applied either in contact or non‐contact fashion at 4–6 watts until a temperature of 50°C was reached. Masses that were significantly thicker than 1 cm had thermocouple needles placed at multiple levels. After 1 month, treatment sites were re‐evaluated. Lesions in which the planned treatment and follow‐up were completed were included.Fifty‐one individual melanomas in seven horses were included. Fifty lesions were classified as ‘Complete Response’ (CR). One thicker lesion had a ‘Partial Response’ (PR) but there was CR to the depth that temperature was reached.Only tumours approximating 1 cm in thickness are practical.Laser photothermal ablation using a 980‐nm therapy laser is a practical, non‐invasive and readily available modality for treating smaller equine dermal melanomas. Thickness rather than surface area is the main limitation for a single application.","PeriodicalId":504519,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"120 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141811856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radiographic projections were performed preoperatively, and a further radiographic examination was performed after the surgical procedure using a Steinmann pin inserted through the surgical approach as a radiopaque marker. The approach to the bullae was also assessed by rhinoscopy. Dissection, macroscopic evaluation and digital photographic records of the surgical approaches were performed.A total of 92% (22/24 bullae) of the evaluated conchal bullae were fenestrated. The approach allowed the fenestration of 11/12 dorsal conchal bullae and 11/12 ventral conchal bullae. The postoperative radiographic evaluation allowed identification of the surgical approach and fenestration positioning by observing the location of the radiopaque pin within the conchal bullae. The dissection showed that the surgical approach to the dorsal conchal bulla was 3 cm dorsal to the infraorbital foramen and dorsal to the levator nasolabialis muscle, with no damage to the vascular or neural structures.The surgical approach to the ventral conchal bulla, when performed 1 cm rostral to the infraorbital foramen, was very close to the branches of the infraorbital nerve, which were identified and moved away from the trephination site. This was an ex vivo study and it is possible that nasal haemorrhage would affect the usefulness in clinical cases.The surgical approaches described in this study allow the fenestration of dorsal and ventral conchal bullae in adult horses in a simple way without the need for specific equipment.","PeriodicalId":504519,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"117 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139801966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following surgery, trauma or other underlying conditions the normal flora may cause eye infection such as conjunctival and corneal infections, or endophthalmitis.This study aimed to investigate the bacterial population and antibiotic resistance of the conjunctiva in healthy horses.Random sampling of ocular samples from 20 horses during the winter (2019).Swab samples were collected from the eyes of 20 healthy horses of different breeds, ages and sexes in Tehran province, Iran. The swabs were cultured on blood agar and MacConkey agar and incubated at 37°C for 24–48 h. The isolated bacteria were characterised using cellular morphology, gram‐staining and biochemical tests. Sensitivity and resistance to 10 different antibiotics were measured using an antibiogram test.Results showed that the bacterial population consisted of various species, with Bacillus cereus being the most frequent. There were no significant differences in the frequency of isolated bacteria between sexes and age groups. There were no significant differences in the sensitivity of the bacterial flora of the eyes to colistin, ceftiofur, florfenicol, amoxicillin and ampicillin between either different age groups or different sexes of the horses (p > 0.05). However, sensitivity to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin was significantly correlated with the age groups of the horses (p > 0.05). A significant difference in sensitivity to trimethoprim‐sulfamethoxazole between various sexes of horses was observed.The nonuniformity of the follow‐up examination, reliance on owners or caregivers of the horse for follow‐up information and lack of adequate financial resources to study more horses.The study suggests that the frequency of individual bacteria comprising the bacterial flora in horses' eyes is influenced by housing and management conditions rather than age and sex.","PeriodicalId":504519,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"48 S1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139802255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three weeks prior to presentation, the horse was found markedly lame at walk following a fall during exercise. The horse was initially managed with field rest, but the lameness persisted. A marked right hindlimb lameness at trot graded 5/10 was confirmed. Atrophy of the right gluteal musculature was evident, and palpation over the region of the right coxofemoral joint provoked a pain reaction. Nuclear scintigraphy revealed a diffuse area of increased radiopharmaceutical uptake in the right femoral head, neck and greater trochanter. Radiographs identified a complete, slightly displaced fracture of the base of the greater trochanter of the right femur. Ultrasound examination of the proximal femur demonstrated an irregularity of the caudolateral bone surface of the greater trochanter, extending along its attachment to the femur; this was consistent with the radiological findings. On re‐examination, after 9 months of stable rest, the horse was found to be sound when trotted in a straight line on the hard surface. Follow‐up two and a half years after the initial incident reported the horse to be nonlame and at its previous level of work.","PeriodicalId":504519,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"8 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139804842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conservative treatment with debridement of the fistula, placement of a temporary alveolar plug and flushing of the sinus cavity can be unsuccessful. Transposition of the levator labii superioris muscle has been reported as an effective surgical option to treat chronic oromaxillary fistulae in anaesthetised horses. In this report, the surgical procedure was carried out on two standing horses, using sedation and local nerve blocks. Transposition of the levator labii superioris muscle can be safely and successfully performed in the standing sedated horse and may be considered for the management of cases with chronic refractory oromaxillary fistulae not responding to conservative treatment.","PeriodicalId":504519,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"3 34","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139803918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Out of the 24 Thoroughbred enrolled, 11/24 (45.8%) had persistent infections in the month of March and 3/24 (12.5%) had persistent infections in April after deworming with ivermectin‐praziquantel. With moxidectin‐praziquantel, 2/24 (8.3%) remained egg count positive. For pyrantel pamoate, 3/24 (12.5%) were detected with tapeworm eggs post‐treatment. During July and August, selected yearlings had faecal sampling done before and 2 weeks post‐deworming with moxidectin‐praziquantel. For July 1/6 (16.7%) horses had tapeworm eggs both before and after deworming, and one additional horse was positive in the post‐treatment sample only. For the August treatment, 4/14 (28.6%) were egg count positive both before and after deworming, with one additional horse being positive in the post‐treatment sample only.This study demonstrated evidence of anthelmintic treatment failure against equine tapeworms by means of regular faecal egg count monitoring. Veterinarians should be aware of this development and implement strategies to monitor anticestodal treatment success.","PeriodicalId":504519,"journal":{"name":"Equine Veterinary Education","volume":"5 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139866724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
