This study developed an innovative \"Waste-Treats-Waste\" strategy, utilizing copper ions from high-acidity Cu-containing electroplating wastewater to synthesize sulfonic acid-functionalized Cu-MOFs (W-HKUST-1-SO 3 H-x) for Pb(II) recovery from lead-acid battery wastewater. A series of materials were successfully synthesized by synergistic coordination with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) and sodium 5-sulfoisophthalic acid (H 3 -5-SIP) as dual ligands. Partial incorporation of H 3 -5-SIP not only increases the adsorption sites but also enhances the adsorption stability and purity of the MOF. Furthermore, the sulfonic acid-functionalized Cu-MOFs exhibited similar physicochemical properties to the commercial MOF (C-HKUST-1). W-HKUST-1-SO 3 H-0.2 demonstrated an excellent Pb(II) recovery capacity of 645.14 mg·g −1 , along with higher adsorption stability in both five-cycle tests and fixed-bed experiments. Experimental results and theoretical analysis indicated that W-HKUST-1 and C-HKUST-1 without sulfonic acid modification mainly adsorbed Pb(II) by ion exchange, while W-HKUST-1-SO 3 H-0.2 adsorbed Pb(II) mainly through coordination with the sulfonic acid group. This study provides a novel strategy for the development of efficient adsorbents and demonstrates the promising potential for practical Pb(II) recovery from lead-acid battery wastewater. • Utilized Cu(II) from acidic electroplating wastewater to synthesize sulfonated Cu-MOFs for Pb(II) recovery. • Enhanced sites/stability via synergistic H3-5-SIP coordination. • Optimized adsorbent showed high Pb(II) capacity and multi-cycle stability. • Sulfonic groups shifted adsorption mechanism to coordination dominance.","PeriodicalId":504472,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Functional Materials","volume":"4 2","pages":"99-107"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147897442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herein, we synthesized ZIF-67 with high BET surface area (1743 m 2 /g) and porosity along with Nickel doped ZIF-67 (Ni@ZIF-67 IBP) by using two different strategies to investigate their impact on synthesis and IBP removal efficiency. The synthesized highly porous adsorbents were employed for the removal of IBP molecules from wastewater. Different characterization techniques, including XPS, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, FTIR, and TGA/DTG analysis, were studied to check the properties and characteristics of the synthesized materials. The Ni@ZIF-67 synthesized via method B has a higher surface area and porosity than the materials synthesized by method A and ultimately possesses a higher IBP uptake capacity (225 ± 5 mg/g). In contrast, the ZIF-67 adsorbent has 187 ± 5 mg/g adsorption efficiency. The adsorption study was conducted under optimum conditions, i.e., adsorbent = Ni@ZIF-67-10%B, m = 2 mg, V = 50 mL, pH = 2, C o = 50 mg/L, and 25 °C. The IBP adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Redlich-Peterson and Langmuir isotherm models. Due to the high BET surface area and porosity of adsorbents, the removal of IBP mainly follows the electrostatic, host-guest, and π-π interactions as the primary adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamic study indicated that the IBP adsorption is thermodynamically favorable and spontaneous. After the 5 th cycle, the overall IBP uptake was almost 72% of the pristine material, which means the adsorbent is effective for the removal of IBP from wastewater. • A simple synthesis of highly porous ZIF-67 MOF with S BET 1743 m 2 /g. • Ni@ZIF-67 achieved q max for ibuprofen adsorption of 225 ± 5 mg/g mg/g. • IBP adsorption followed pseudo 2 nd order kinetics and Langmuir/Redlich-Peterson isotherms. • Electrostatic, host-guest, and π- π interactions are the primary adsorption mechanism. • The IBP adsorption process is thermodynamically favorable and spontaneous.","PeriodicalId":504472,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Functional Materials","volume":"4 2","pages":"170-182"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147903475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Amine-functionalized MOFs significantly enhance CO 2 adsorption, yet most studies focus on adsorption capacity, with limited research on the impacts of water vapor and oxidative stability in practical DAC applications. Herein, MIL-100(Cr) was modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI), tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), and diethanolamine (DEA) via impregnation, and their CO 2 capture performance under DAC conditions was systematically evaluated, including adsorption capacity, cyclic stability, water resistance, and oxidative stability. PEI-modified MIL-100(Cr) exhibited the best CO 2 adsorption capacity, achieving 1.21 mmol g −1 at the same level of amine incorporation and retained over 90 % of its initial capacity after 20 cycles. Under humid conditions, the CO 2 adsorption performance of solid amine materials was further improved, due to the enhanced utilization of amine sites, particularly increased accessibility of secondary amines. Furthermore, the PEI-modified MIL-100(Cr) exhibited superior oxidative stability compared to TEPA-modified adsorbents. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing MOF-based adsorbents in practical DAC applications. • MIL-100(Cr) was modified with PEI, TEPA, and DEA by impregnation. • CO 2 uptake over Cr-50%PEI reaches 1.21 mmol g −1 with better adsorption and stability. • Humid conditions enhance CO 2 adsorption by improving amine efficiency. • Cr-50%PEI exhibits strong coordination and high oxidative stability.","PeriodicalId":504472,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Functional Materials","volume":"4 3","pages":"221-229"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147896725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
