It is impossible to avoid failure and blunders, even with stringent procedures, employee education, and/or the implementation of the latest technology. This holds true even for persons who are incredibly successful and well-respected, since most effective leaders have more professional failures than triumphs. Their capacity to learn from their mistakes is a key factor in determining how successful they are, and this has led to, learning from failure becoming a more popular topic for research into organisational learning and individual development. In this article, we have compiled many studies how to learn from failure effectively and the variables that may affect this process.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":" 629","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141364217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Managers in the same industry differ in respect of their willingness to adopt coopetition. To better understand coopetitive decision-making, we need a model whereby such decisions can be experimented with and analysed. An important prerequisite of such a model would be its capacity to measure the performance consequences of coopetitive interactions at both firm and relationship levels. We show that existing operationalisation has limited capacity to do that. Based on existing game theoretical constructs, we propose a new operationalisation of a coopetitive decision-making episode in horizontal business relationships using a two-step sequential game. We suggest developing what we term a “coopetitive composite solution matrix” by summing up the payoff functions of the two steps of the game. The suggested operationalisation has the capacity to measure all the potential performance consequences of a complex piece of coopetitive decision-making in an episode. In this way, the decision problem’s cognitive representation becomes straightforward and analysis of the impact of the behavioural attributes of managers on the actual decision-making process is unambiguous.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":"80 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140979010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there has been little research to date on cross-cultural communication challenges in project management, and this is particularly the case where the IT sector and rollout projects are concerned. Our research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication on IT-related projects by identifying key challenging factors encountered by research participants. The purposive sampling criteria included “multiple years of experience in global IT rollout projects” and “working in multiple countries, including other continents as well”. These criteria stipulated that participants possess a specific kind of experience in multicultural social contexts, based on which we interviewed ten experts. These global professionals come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and have each worked in three to twelve countries (8.4 on average).An interpretative phenomenological approach was applied, in which the interpretation of participants’ lived experiences was linked to relevant literature: cross-cultural communication and cultural profiles, organisational and national culture models, and cross-cultural project management. Our findings revealed six significant areas that have emerged as key sources of intercultural problems on ERP related IT rollout projects: language, hidden assumptions, work-life balance, confrontation, time management, and apparent lies.The implications and value of our study derive from the lessons learned by the interviewed experts as they are recognised as individuals with valuable information and abilities – developed through significant international experience – that may inform the practice of other project managers similarly working for multinational IT organisations.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":" 25","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140688029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, despite the extensive examination of both the original DD theory and its variations in numerous country cases, the findings remain contradictory and inconclusive, primarily due to the challenges associated with measuring DD. Building upon the notable case study of the Azerbaijani economy, this paper introduces a novel way to utilise principal component analysis (PCA) in index development, which incorporates the modelling framework of the original theory and provides a profound understanding of DD measurement. The findings of the study reveal that the fundamental variables associated with DD in the Azerbaijani economy can be effectively condensed into a small number of principal components (PCs). In addition, this research introduces not only a total Dutch disease index (TDDI), but also a resource movement index (RMI) and a spending index (SI), with the last of these demonstrating a more pronounced impact in Azerbaijan. The estimated indexes exhibit a significant and negative correlation with the manufacturing sector’s share in the industry, pointing to the presence of the crowding-out mechanism of DD. Moreover, a strong positive correlation is observed with key growth indicators such as gross domestic product (GDP) and gross capital formation, underscoring the exceptional role of the oil boom in the Azerbaijani economy. These findings justify the contention that DD is present in the Azerbaijani economy. The paper also provides a composite index that can be utilised by both policymakers and scholars for measuring DD.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":"4 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140243278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several studies confirm that personality is the individual difference that is most associated with the likelihood of an accident occurring; it is therefore necessary to address the identification and expression of the characteristics of safety personality. This paper aims to present a personality questionnaire the authors have created, which was administered to employees of a large Hungarian company in the electricity supply business with altogether 1273 employees obligated to prioritise workplace safety. The final version of the questionnaire contained 59 items. Based on the statistical results, 58.08% of the variance of total variables was explained by 10 factors; the scales of the questionnaire developed are otherwise reliable. The paper also examines the validation of the scales using different psychological measures.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":"164 S344","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140428690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its main goal was to observe what the strategic profits and entrepreneurial expectations were for these businesses, based on consideration of three factors: Factor 1 (Strategic profits and entrepreneurial expectations), Factor 2 (Financing and investing expectations), and Factor 3 (Strategic profits). Were these factors associated with one another when making financing and investment decisions, and which variables should be considered more carefully by businesses to improve performance, survive as a business and stay ahead of competitors, meet stakeholder expectations and achieve strategic profit forecasts? Through data processing (SPSS program for Windows 16) using tests and econometric analysis (descriptive, factorial, reliability, and multiple regression) the model shows that all three factors play a significant role in determining strategic profits and entrepreneurial expectations. However, it is suggested that if staff cannot quickly adapt to changes in the environment, and the managerial skills and correct leadership are not in place to execute ideas that increase profit, ensure the regular repayment of debts and loans, deploy innovative strategies, maintain a company's legal status and evaluate the work of employees, then businesses will struggle to increase their strategic profit and guarantee their market survival when compared to their competitors.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":"58 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139602573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted a 7 week-long \"Renewal programme\" intervention, which was based on self-compassion theory and the self-concordance model. Self-compassion practices advocate the adoption of an accepting mindset regarding one's own mistakes, and further assume that by setting self-concordant goals, one can create the conditions for long-term intrinsic motivation. Our results showed that the Renewal programme decreased participants' burnout levels. It also turned out that the programme was more effective for those participants who were doing their homework regularly. Self-compassion was a relatively new concept for teachers who participated in the intervention, but 6 months after the programme ended, the levels of it had increased further beyond what was recorded in the post-measurement. Our results show that social support is an important characteristic of the programme, as burnout subsequently decreased, while self-compassion increased, possibly due to the decreasing support of the former group members. As an enhancement, we recommend creating a private social media group for participants, something which would enable future participants to stay in touch after a programme like this has ended.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":"179 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139175628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transformational and engaging leadership styles are widely assumed to be proven determinants of work engagement, although these conclusions are based mostly on followers' evaluations. Therefore, we analysed followers' and leaders' evaluations simultaneously and used congruent results to test which leadership dimensions positively impact followers' work engagement. Our results show that follower-rated passive and charismatic leadership negatively affect work engagement. In contrast, follower-rated inspirational communication and passive leadership rated by leaders positively affect above-average work engagement. From them, inspirational communication seemed to be the most influential factor. These results draw attention to the importance of leaders' communication and emphasise its role in leader-follower interactions.","PeriodicalId":504060,"journal":{"name":"Periodica Polytechnica Social and Management Sciences","volume":"86 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139201906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
