{"title":"L’Œil du cyclone","authors":"Isabel Bradley","doi":"10.3828/franc.2023.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3828/franc.2023.11","url":null,"abstract":"This article probes the convergence of meteorological disaster and memory in L’Île et une nuit by Daniel Maximin and La Case du commandeur by Édouard Glissant, reading fragments of these novels through reflections lifted from spiritual autobiographies by M. Jacqui Alexander and Mimerose Beaubrun. While anglophone Black studies scholar Christina Sharpe employs weather systems and climate as figures to apprehend the pervasiveness of antiblackness in today’s world, hurricane disaster takes another form as a device used by francophone Caribbean authors to observe and disrupt the ontological negation of Black people. Tracing the multiple resonances between ‘the wake’ (Sharpe, 2016) as a prismatic theoretical tool and meanings of water, passages, and wakefulness generated by hurricanes in Glissant and Maximin, this article explores the relation between this meteorological disaster event and an expansive consciousness of the human disasters of deportation and rupture. Regroupant plus de 300 écrivains et intellectuels du monde entier, le Parlement se voue à écouter « le Cri du Monde » en offrant résidence et hospitalité aux écrivains persécutés et menacés à travers la création du réseau des Villes Refuges. Durant une décennie, le Parlement contribue à la circulation et à la diffusion des œuvres censurées grâce à ses actions et la publication de sa revue Autodafé . Vingt ans après son auto-dissolution, cet article retrace l’itinéraire de ce lieu-parlement en repensant cette assemblée comme une expression particulière du « lieu-commun », tel qu’énoncé par le poète martiniquais Édouard Glissant. Il interroge en quoi le cheminement du Parlement international des écrivains esquisse les fondations d’une approche relationnelle des lieux et de la production culturelle à travers le tissage de réseaux et intrications dans la « totalité-monde ». {"title":"‘Pour constituer une “Bibliothèque de Littérature Nègre”’","authors":"J. Hodgkinson","doi":"10.3828/franc.2023.9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3828/franc.2023.9","url":null,"abstract":"Arthur Barnett Spingarn (1878–1971) was a Jewish American lawyer who during the early twentieth century built an extensive personal library of books by authors of African descent. In 1937, Spingarn delivered a speech in Washington, DC entitled ‘Collecting a Library of Negro Literature’, which sought to expand his audience’s understanding of black literature beyond the United States. The following year, Spingarn’s address was published in anonymous French translation by the Haitian literary and political journal La Relève (1932–1939). This article is an enquiry into how this translation, entitled ‘Pour constituer une “Bibliothèque de Littérature Nègre”’, was used by editors Jacques Carméleau Antoine, Jean Fouchard, and Jules Blanchet to feed into the cultural debates taking place in Haiti during the 1930s. I focus on two key aspects of Spingarn’s text: firstly, his vision for a transnational and transhistorical ‘bibliothèque de littérature nègre’, the broad scope of which corresponded to two related, yet ultimately divergent, cultural ideologies prevalent in post-occupation Haiti, namely, the cultural syncretism of the Indigenists and the ethno-nationalism of the Noirists. Secondly, I assess Spingarn’s schema for the individuals involved in building an archive of black literature, revealing parallel ‘bourgeois public literary spheres’ (Stieber, 2020, p. 13) in Haiti and the United States. The inter-American trajectory of Spingarn’s address reveals a transatlantic interest in collecting practices associated with black literature. {"title":"Faire rêver le monde avec Leïla Slimani (entretien)","authors":"Adina Stroia","doi":"10.3828/franc.2023.13","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3828/franc.2023.13","url":null,"abstract":"L’écrivaine franco-marocaine Leïla Slimani a fait irruption sur la scène littéraire française avec son premier roman, Dans le jardin de l’ogre (2014), qui raconte l’histoire d’Adèle Robinson, une Parisienne de la classe moyenne supérieure qui a un goût prononcé pour les situations sexuelles à risque, penchant qui menace de faire voler en éclats sa vie trop stable. Son deuxième roman, Chanson douce (2016), a définitivement consacré Slimani en tant qu’écrivaine en France et à l’étranger. Couronné par le prestigieux Prix Goncourt et acclamé par la critique littéraire, ce deuxième roman est également devenu un bestseller mondial. Inspiré de faits réels, Chanson douce met en scène une nounou qui tue les deux enfants de la famille pour laquelle elle travaille. Le roman surprend le lecteur par son rythme aux allures de thriller et par la précision glaçante de son écriture. Alors que l’histoire de ses deux premiers romans se déroulait dans une France contemporaine, les romans les plus récents de Slimani qui font partie d’une trilogie annoncée, Le Pays des autres (2020) et Regardez-nous danser (2022), plongent le lecteur dans l’histoire récente du Maroc depuis les années 1960 et dresse un portrait détaillé d’un pays en mutation sous la forme d’une saga familiale d’inspiration autobiographique. Le présent entretien prend comme point de départ les écrits les plus récents de l’écrivaine et rassemble les points de vue Slimani sur la nature entremêlée de l’histoire et de l’histoire personnelle ou du récit, la fonction de l’écrivain et de l’écriture à l’ère contemporaine, ainsi que sur les outils nécessaires pour raconter une « histoire vraie ». Nous nous attelons également au passé colonial du Maroc et à la notion d’altérité, ainsi qu’aux approches décoloniales. Nous interrogeons ensuite le projet féministe à travers un prisme postcolonial et nous abordons la question des héritages féministes tout en nous tournant vers la Française du futur et ce à quoi elle pourrait ressembler dans un pays en pleine mutation politique.
