The results suggest that there exists a nonlinear causality from geopolitical risks to crude oil prices. Moreover, geopolitical risks have a short-term impact on oil prices, less than 12 months. Actual geopolitical events have a smaller and less lasting impact on oil prices than pure geopolitical risks.</p>","PeriodicalId":501439,"journal":{"name":"Spanish Journal of Finance and Accounting / Revista Española de Financiación y Contabilidad","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138543736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a comprehensive set of corporate news, we find a negative relation between media coverage and financial leverage. The tests we use to address endogeneity suggest that the effect is causal. Cross-sectional tests indicate that the results are more pronounced when board or shareholder monitoring is weaker. We further find that the effect of media coverage is more pronounced for news related to executives (i.e., the news that are more likely to impose reputational costs on managers). Our findings are consistent with a substitution effect between the external governance imposed by the media and the discipline provided by debt financing.</p>","PeriodicalId":501439,"journal":{"name":"Spanish Journal of Finance and Accounting / Revista Española de Financiación y Contabilidad","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138535352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prior research assessed the impact of the debt crisis on the financial firms, but its effect on other industries was broadly neglected. My results reveal that, at the height of the crisis, delayed shocks transmission from the sovereign bond to the stock market occurred mainly in Greece. At the industry level, there is no evidence of lagged response of the financial industry to negative sovereign debt shocks, but sovereign debt leads other industries in, at least, one country. These findings are consistent with the investor inattention hypothesis, which states that investors tend to specialise in specific markets, due to their limited availability of time and resources and the cost of information gathering, and information flows slowly across markets.</p>","PeriodicalId":501439,"journal":{"name":"Spanish Journal of Finance and Accounting / Revista Española de Financiación y Contabilidad","volume":"281 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138535354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
