From 1942 to 1945 the organization was split into two factions, and even in the face of the Soviet threat internal disputes continued. The main assumption of the article is to show the genesis of the creation of the „Bałtyk” District of the National Military Union. At the time in question a large Tatar inva- sion was in progress, which resulted in the rapid enlargement of the entire Crown army. Huge tax increases were introduced due to the prospect of an offensive war against the Ottoman Empire. The rapidly expanding army did not receive its due pay, leading to the first army confederation (pol. konfederacja wojskowa) in his- tory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The 4th Sudety and 5th Upper Silesian WOP Brigades were directly involved in these activities. These units were attached to the 2nd Army of the lWP, which on 20 August 1968, alongside military units of the USSR, Bulgaria, and Hungary, entered Czechoslovakia. The diary was written by the „Butrym” subgroup commander, Lieutenant Feliks Ankerstein, and it describes events that took place between 1 May and 21 July 1921. The analysis concerns the preparations conducted by both the Polish military and its society in the event of a nuclear attack within the Central European Theater of War Operations as well as the risk of mutual nuclear strikes by the Warsaw Pact and NATO. Scenarios of potential strikes and estimates of their hypothetical effects, which were discovered in declassified documents from the Cold War period, were compared to the results of contemporary computerized simulations.
