Surgically encountered diseases, causes, indicated treatment methods, and possible complications were evaluated and it was thought to contribute to scientific and clinical studies on this subject. \u0000Material-Method: The material of this study consisted of a total of 150 calves of different breeds, ages, and sexes brought to Aksaray University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital Surgery Clinic between December 2017 and 2023 due to various problems. \u0000Result: In terms of surgical diseases, 37.3% of 150 calves were soft tissue, 56.6% orthopedics, 2% ophthalmology, and 4% neurology cases. Congenital anomalies were found in 44.65% of 56 patients with soft tissue disease. Orthopedic examination revealed, 57.1% of the cases had fractures, 23.8% had arthritis and 19% had tendon diseases. It was determined that 37.3% of the surgical cases between 2017 and 2023 were soft tissue-related. In addition to soft tissue diseases, there were 5 ophthalmologic cases, including orbital mass (n=2) and dermoid cyst (n=3) \u0000Conclusion Finally, while cattle breeding has great economic importance in our country, calf losses occur due to economic conditions such as artificial insemination errors, irregular registration systems, lack of standardization of care and housing, incorrect intervention of the patient owner, and treatment costs. It is envisaged that economic losses will be minimized with early diagnosis, early intervention, appropriate medical treatment, and surgical treatment options.

The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of pine resin in corneal wounds. In this study, three groups of 7 male Wistar Albino rats (n=7), each 2 months old, were established. To create the corneal wound model, the rats were anesthetized and the borders of the wound to be created on the corneal surface were determined using a 3 mm punch biopsy, then the first two layers of the cornea were removed with a corneal knife. Then, the first group was considered as the control group and no treatment was performed. The second group was determined as the pine resin group and applied once a day. The third group was considered as the drug group and was administered once a day. Fluorescein staining was performed every day for three days and the results were recorded. Pine resin group showed the fastest recovery. On the third day, the rats were euthanized, and their eyes were enucleated. The collected eyes were sent for histopathologic examination and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The lesions in the examined specimens were evaluated under microscope for hyperemia, vascularization, cellular infiltration, and corneal edema. As a result of the study, ulceration was observed in the pine resin group. The study concluded that pine resin reduces clinical symptoms and promotes healing in corneal wounds.

The calves were divided into two groups: one group with normal potassium levels (n=24) and another group with hyperkalemia (n=16) due to neonatal diarrhea. After the initial clinical examination was conducted on the farm, electrocardiographic investigations were carried out utilizing an ECG equipment. The biochemical analysis of blood samples that were collected in red and dry collecting tubes was carried out with the assistance of an automated analyzing machine Results: The findings indicate that there were no statistically significant differences observed across all ECG variables between the two groups. Conclusion: Acidemia and metabolic acidosis are commonly observed in calves suffering from hyperkalemic diarrhea, as documented in previous investigations, often accompanied by heart rhythm problems. In contrast, the current investigation revealed that neonatal calves with diarrhea and hyperkalemia had just a deepening of the T wave, without any additional abnormalities. Nevertheless, it is important to note that acidemia and metabolic acidosis were not of a severe nature. The implementation of Holter monitoring is indicated for calves experiencing hyperkalemia in conjunction with diarrhea.

The effect of evening primrose oil (EPO) on insülin, adiponectin and resistin levels in brain tissue was investigated in a fructose-related metabolic syndrome model. Materials and Methods: The rats were divided into 4 groups as control, evening primrose oil (orally at a dose of 0.1 ml/rat/day), fructose (20% fructose added), fructose+evening primrose oil for 57 days. At the end of the experiment, brain samples were taken and homogenized. Then, insülin, adiponectin and resistin levels were determined by ELISA. Results: Plasma insulin and resistin levels of the fructose group increased (p≤0.05 ) compared to the controls, on the contrary, adiponectin levels were significantly decreased (p≤0.05 ) in the fructose group. When EPO was given to rats given fructose, increased insulin and resistin levels decreased, while decreased adiponectin levels were increased. Conclusion: Fructose-induced impaired metabolic changes in brain tissue were partially ameliorated when EPO was administered. Accordingly, the use of EPO in the medical setting may be recommended by clinicians to reduce the harmful effects on the brain, since metabolic changes in the brains of rat fed with high fructose content can also occur with the intake of fructose from various foods in humans.

This study aimed to investigate whether there is a correlation between glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and neurofilament (NF) expression in canine distemper encephalomyelitis (CDE) and the severe neuropathology that occurs. Materials and Methods: GFAP and NF expression levels in the brain tissue of 13 dogs diagnosed with CDE were investigated by immunohistochemical method. Results: The results of the study revealed that GFAP (P < 0.005) and NF (P < 0.005) expression levels in brain tissue were significantly increased in CDV-infected dogs compared to healthy, uninfected dogs. GFAP expression was mainly observed in endothelial cells and astrocytes, whereas NF expression was mainly found in neurons. In addition, it was found that the expression of both GFAP and NF was more pronounced in the areas with the most severe neuropathological findings. Conclusions: This study demonstrated pathological astrocyte reactivation and neuronal degeneration at the molecular level. These findings provide information about the stage of the disease. This study clearly demonstrated that detailed information about the prognosis of the disease can be obtained from GFAP and NF expression. Since GFAP/NF levels provide information about the severity of the disease, they can be used clinically. Therefore, further research into the involvement of GFAP and NF expression in the pathophysiology of CDE has great potential to improve our understanding of this complex neurological disorder.
