Recognising the significance of innovation in economic growth, this article utilises unique firm-level data from China for the year 2012 to investigate the influence of R&D, product innovation and process innovation on firm productivity. The findings suggest that R&D positively affects the performance of Chinese firms, as measured by either firm sales or sales per permanent full-time employee. Moreover, product innovation may have a detrimental impact on firm performance, whereas the impact of process innovation lacks robustness. The article shows how sociocultural barriers impact female labour force participation and male–female wage disparity in the presence of male unemployment in the labour market in a developing economy. The analysis finds a rise in gender wage inequality and a decrease in male unskilled labour unemployment when the female labour force rises due to a fall in sociocultural barriers. Finally, we show that the Gini coefficient of income inequality of unskilled labour and gender-based wage inequality move in opposite directions due to the rise in female labour participation in the workforce and the fall in the male unemployment rate. Considering the core characteristic of a rentier state (such as Nigeria)—a distributive political economy—the article examines how the stability of Nigerian political system can be affected by oil rents over the period 1996–2021. Through the adoption of autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds test to cointegration and vector error correction mechanism (VECM) for the test of long-run causality, the apparent effect of oil rents on Nigerian political development is reflected in the analyses and findings. Empirical evidence supports the oil impedes political stability assertion, as there is statistically valid negative association between oil rents and political stability in the short run and long run. It is demonstrated that oil wealth could offer greater incentives for civil conflicts, which have resulted in escalating political problems. In addition, the causality mechanism implies that the relationship found merely indicates association between oil rents and the level of political stability in the long term, and it is not causal. Thus, it is posited that through the adoption and implementation of sound policy measures, the escalation of conflicts would likely subside, especially in most oil-rich regions or states, whereas civil order could be promoted. It is, therefore, critical to enhancing fairness in the use and distribution of oil wealth, improving people’s welfare, particularly in the oil-producing communities and in general, ensuring that democratic principles in the management of resource windfalls are sustained. In order to accurately assess and evaluate the overall socioeconomic progress of AZRF, the heterogeneous factors should be considered in an integrated manner, which will give a holistic view of the socioeconomic stability and development of the region. The available literature on socioeconomic development of Russian Arctic region however suffers from lack of integrated analysis of heterogeneous indicators. In this article, the authors have selected five heterogeneous indicators which best describe the socioeconomic condition of a given region, which in this case is AZRF and performed integral analysis for the time period 2014–2019. The indicators refer to socioeconomic aspects such as gross regional product and amount of investments received by the region, which in turn leads to changes in employment opportunities and income level of the population along with social benefits available to them. The mathematical instrument used for the analysis is the theory of fuzzy logic in the framework of determination of the subdirect image of a fuzzy set. This method is scalable and can be extended to any number of indicators of diverse nature since the final score will be in the range of [0, 1] making comparison of regions and ranking possible. Using this method, the subjects were ranked at individual indicator level and at holistic level as a result of which the advantages and disadvantages of each subject and the AZRF as a whole were determined. At holistic level, the subjects were ranked as Krasnayarsky Krai, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Republic of Komi, Murmansk Oblast, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Karelia Republic, Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug based on the integral scores obtained. Using time-series data from 1975 to 2017, the study uses the female labour force participation rate (FLFPR), an indicator of women’s economic empowerment, and the export/GDP (X/GDP) ratio, trade/GDP ratio and foreign direct investment (FDI), indicators of economic globalisation. The research examines econometrically whether economic globalisation such as X/GDP ratio, trade/GDP ratio and FDI influence FLFPR and how to control variables like population growth rate (POP) and real wage rate influence FLFPR. The estimated results show a positive and significant relationship between FLFPR and X/GDP, and RWR and a negative but significant relationship between FLFPR and trade/GDP ratio, and a negative and insignificant relationship between FLFPR and FDI, and POP. The study has employed an auto-regressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. In addition, the error correction model has been used to capture the speed of adjustment. The findings from the ARDL-bound testing approach reveal that the variables under study are cointegrated and thus have a long-run relationship. The coefficient of error correction term holds a theoretically correct sign and is also statistically significant, meaning that there exists short-run adjustment in the whole system.
