II","authors":"Oleksandr Taranenko","doi":"10.33190/0027-2833-331-2023-4-001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33190/0027-2833-331-2023-4-001","url":null,"abstract":"The article highlights the main changes in the Ukrainian language as a result of the current Russia-Ukraine war (since 2014, especially after February 24, 2022). The changes have already covered both the corpus (structure) of the Ukrainian language and various aspects of its realization and its social status. Within the language corpus, it becomes the most noticeable, of course, in the field of nomination. In this field, firstly, naturally has been foregrounded the military vocabulary; secondly, it focused on the language images, on the one hand, of Ukraine (accentuating the «statist» connotations of the word family parts), and on the other hand, of Russia as an aggressor state (with a greater frequency and number of names associated with it, and the negative expressive connotations they have acquired); thirdly, there have been drastic changes towards de-communization (de-sovietization) and de-russification (both in cultural-historical and normative terms) of various thematic classes of the country’s proper names. In general, there has been an increase in tendencies towards the further de-russification of the Ukrainian literary language. In the stylistic palette, increases the use of, on the one hand, elevated (as to «one’s own» and «one’s people»), and on the other, degraded (relative to the aggressor state) vocabulary and phraseology. In the pragmatics of this period’s discourses on the topics of the historical «fate» of Ukraine, you may already posit the final transition from the image of the Ukrainians as a victim people to the cultivation of its heroism. The media practices lowercase spelling of proper names associated with current Russia (as a manifestation of extreme disrespect for the designated objects). The letters V and Z have quite unexpectedly become the linguistic signs of modern Russian imperialism. In regard to the functioning in modern Ukraine of the two main languages of communication, the position of the Ukrainian language strengthens.","PeriodicalId":471428,"journal":{"name":"Мовознавство","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135886649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"STYLISTIC FEATURES OF ENGLISH-LANGUAGE LINGUISTIC ABSTRACTS: A CORPUS-BASED STUDY","authors":"Nataliia KRAMAR, Olga ILCHENKO","doi":"10.33190/0027-2833-331-2023-4-003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33190/0027-2833-331-2023-4-003","url":null,"abstract":"While the genre of research abstract has recently gained much attention in the field of English for Academic Purposes, there is an acute need for more profound research into its ever-changing stylistic conventions, particularly in the area of linguistics. The purpose of the present study was to determine the stylistic features of modern Englishlanguage abstracts based on a corpus of 300 abstracts from leading journals in the field of linguistics, published in 2020 to 2023. The methodology integrated corpus methods (frequency and collocation analysis) with qualitative methods (contextual and pragmatic analysis) to determine the rhetorical and communicative strategies correlating with the identified linguistic devices. Relying on previous relevant studies, we primarily focused on the grammar categories of tense and voice. It was found out that present tense is predominant in the sample, though quite often authors choose to alternate tenses within one abstract, restricting past tense to the description of methodology and results. In these sections, it is also more common for authors to shift to passive voice, while the introduction, conclusion and implications are written mostly in active voice. Abstracts written entirely in passive voice are extremely rare in our corpus, which has important pedagogical implications. Also, we revealed that linguists are prone to non-personal use of active voice via self-referential nominals such as the study investigates, the results show. Thus, they diminish their own agency as researchers and reinforce the impression of scientific objectivity. Another stylistic aspect that we addressed is referring to previous research in the field. While it is mostly associated with the opening rhetorical move (introduction/background), we demonstrate that authors frequently refer to other studies in the field in later stages of an abstract to situate their research within the global landscape. It is becoming common for linguists to indicate in the abstract the studies they have drawn upon and the studies that their outcomes agree or disagree with. This finding should also be taken into consideration in English academic writing courses for researchers in linguistics.","PeriodicalId":471428,"journal":{"name":"Мовознавство","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135886646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

O. Potebni of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Lydia Andronivna Yurchuk on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth (04.06.1923– 06.06.2011). The life and creative path of L. A. Yurchuk is highlighted, her contribution to the development of Ukrainian linguistics ⸺ lexicology, lexicography, phraseology and phraseography is outlined, in particular, the most important lexicographic works created with her active participation are considered: Ukrainian-Russian Dictionary in 6 volumes (1953– 1963), Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language in 11 volumes (1970– 1980), Phraseological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language in 2 volumes. (1993). The directions of L. A. Yurchuk’s research at various stages of scientific activity are outlined: the issue of suffix word formation of verbs in the modern Ukrainian language, the display of verb control in the Dictionary of the Ukrainian language, the relationship between the syntactic features of a word and its lexical meaning, illustrative material as a means of semantic characterization of a word in explanatory dictionary, theoretical principles of the register of the phraseological dictionary of the Ukrainian language, basics of Ukrainian phraseology, etc. Dictionaries of translation, interpretation and phraseological types, which the researcher worked on, are presented. The role of the editor, executive secretary of the editorial board of the eleven-volume explanatory dictionary, head of the phraseological dictionary group as a coordinator of work on lexicographic works was noted. It is concluded that the scientific output of the lexicologist and phraseographer L. A. Yurchuk vividly illustrates the lexicographic process of the second half of the 20th century. With her active participation, the most significant dictionaries of this period were created, the theoretical foundation of the new scientific field of phraseography, which is successfully developing, was laid. The scientific heritage of L. A. Yurchuk contributes to the elevation of the prestige of Ukrainian linguistic science, in particular lexicology, lexicography and phraseography.","PeriodicalId":471428,"journal":{"name":"Мовознавство","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135886644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
