Rainey","doi":"10.4324/9780351260445-2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4324/9780351260445-2","url":null,"abstract":"At Disney World, the name tags of Cast Members (as they like to call themselves) are magical.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000I remember laying eyes on these name tags on a family vacation and \u0000thinking, in a flash, that Walt Disney was a psychological genius.\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Why? \u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Well, for one thing, right off the bat, my family was on a first-name\u0000basis with every Cast Member we met. This subtle cue was one a way for \u0000Walt to make the millions of Disney World visitors—including us—feel at \u0000home. \u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000Even better, right under their first name, printed in bold, capital \u0000letters, was each Cast Member's hometown or college. This small detail \u0000had the effect of turning a total stranger into a real person, with a \u0000childhood and a life story. What's more, it led effortlessly to \u0000connections like these: “Detroit! My Aunt Sue lived near there. Do you \u0000know a little town called Pinckney?” \u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000In other words, the name tags of Disney Cast Members are, \u0000effectively, a social belonging intervention.
