Use of these standards will result in a library's ability to purchase individual electronic journal titles as well as component pieces (articles) and provide detailed catalog links to them. In addition, the standards could enable sophisticated copyright management systems. The standards discussed include the following: the Serial Item and Contribution Identifier, the Digital Object Identifier, the Publisher Item Identifier and the Internet standards, Uniform Resource Locator and Uniform Resource Name, for naming and describing networked resources on the World Wide Web.","PeriodicalId":430993,"journal":{"name":"Periodical Acquisitions and the Internet","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126108260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Skills required by library personnel have increased with the proliferation of serial titles and formats. Use of multiple systems to perform routine functions requires greater understanding of the interrelatedness of library units and connectivity of technology. Shifts in workloads and workflow, requiring staff with different skill levels and backgrounds, have resulted in real-location of human resources in libraries. Training in several areas-aspects of librarianship, technology, and interpersonal skills-must be ongoing. Human reactions to technological change will determine the success or failure of technology. Training and communication are the keys to managing change, alleviating anxiety in the workplace, and success.","PeriodicalId":430993,"journal":{"name":"Periodical Acquisitions and the Internet","volume":"184 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130012228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes various decisions involved in acquiring electronic journals, addresses the nature of potential problems, and offers possible solutions. The discussion covers investigation and verification of electronic journal titles, complexities of ordering and receiving, and maintenance of ongoing availability of electronic journal titles. Rather than presenting step-by-step instructions, this paper encourages the reader to learn ways of looking at the situation and ways of understanding events, so the reader's decision-making becomes as well informed as possible.","PeriodicalId":430993,"journal":{"name":"Periodical Acquisitions and the Internet","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125387466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
