The blocking and theoutage probability of the system users are evaluated under varioustraffic conditions for several uplink/downlink configurations ofthe time slots, demonstrating that the time division full duplexapproach needs a careful tuning in order to maximize systemcapacity. Our work further shows that even when data traffic playsthe predominant role, the TDD system can satisfyingly cope withremarkable traffic loads and support several Erlangs of traffic percell.","PeriodicalId":429648,"journal":{"name":"WMI '01","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133756912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first define the representative ad hocnetworking applications such as wireless access to the Internet,document distribution, videoconferencing, webcasting, interactionwith sensors and actuators, etc. For such applications, we definethe performance requirements placed on the PAN. There are twotechnologies now competing for the PAN market: the IEEE802.11“legacy” technology, and the newly introduced Bluetoothtechnology. By IEEE802.11, we refer to the operation of 802.11 inthe DCF mode, which is the mode implemented in the commercialWaveLAN cards. In the rest of the paper, we will use WaveLAN torefer to 802.11 in its DCF mode. We will attempt to answer thequestions: how effective is the Bluetooth technology in supportingcollaborative, “virtual ad hoc networking” applicationsand how does it compare with WaveLAN? To answer these questions, wehave developed an NS-2 model of Bluetooth. We have also developedmodels of adaptive applications such as voice and video. ForWaveLAN, we have used the existing NS-2 models. The results showthat Bluetooth provides better support for real-time applicationsas compared to WaveLAN. It does not exhibit the“capture” behavior observed, for example, in WaveLAN.Also, with the addition of nodes to the “indoor” space,it adds to the total “system” capacity and gives abetter overall throughput.","PeriodicalId":429648,"journal":{"name":"WMI '01","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132848369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the case, though, ofmobile users working in group, using a PLMN infrastructure, theaforementioned networks foresee no special treatment. However,services tightly related to a specific geographic area, like forexample security or surveillance services, could be implemented bya group of collaborating Mobile Nodes forming a mobile intranetthat uses the facilities of a PLMN. In this paper, after adescription of what the specifications provide, methods areproposed for the deployment of intranets over the GPRS or the UMTSinfrastructure. At this aim, the concept of the GIP is introducedregarding a frame of interconnected SGSNs, within the GPRS/UMTSenvironment. This frame supports, without the intervention of theGGSN, the mobility of a number of Mobile Nodes belonging to thesame group, as well as the data traffic between them. Moreover, theadditional tasks to be undertaken by the SGSNs forming the frameare described.","PeriodicalId":429648,"journal":{"name":"WMI '01","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115151258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New applications will emerge,combining several basic services like voice telephony, e-mail,voice over IP, mobility or web-browsing, and thus wiping out theborders between the fixed telephone network, mobile radio and theInternet. Offering those value-added services will be the keyfactor for success of network and service providers in anincreasingly competitive market. In 3GPP's service framework theuse of the PARLAY APIs is proposed that allow applicationdevelopment by third parties in order to speed up service creationand deployment. 3GPP has also adopted SIP for session control ofmultimedia communications in an IP network. This paper proposes amapping of SIP functionality to PARLAY services and describes aprototype implementation using the SIP Servlet API. Furthermore anarchitecture of a Service Platform is presented that offers aframework for the creation, execution and management of carriergrade multimedia services in heterogeneous networks.","PeriodicalId":429648,"journal":{"name":"WMI '01","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128565612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It alsoallows these clients to access internet services, corporatedatabases, and to control various networked devices. iMobileimplements three key abstractions: devlet, infolet,and applet. A devlet is a driver attached to the proxy thatreceives and sends messages through a particular protocol formobile devices. An infolet hosted on iMobile uses an access methodto provide an abstract view of an information space. An appletimplements service or application logic by processing informationfrom various infolets. The Core of iMobile, the let engine,implements the basic framework for maintaining applets, devlets andinfolets, supports user and device profiles for personalization andtranscoding, and invokes proper applets and infolets to answerrequests from a devlet. The iMobile architecture allows new accessdevices and protocols to be added to its framework without changesin the service logic. iMobile effectively provides a personal agenton the network that enables a user to have mobile access to thevast information and services available on the various wireless andwireline networks, without being limited by where the user is orwhat device or communication or protocol is available.","PeriodicalId":429648,"journal":{"name":"WMI '01","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133748447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
