Polymer velvet and graphite cathodes are tested respectively in the experiments, whose diameters and lengths are the same. The results of experimental comparison between them are presented in the paper. Both cathodes are tested at electric field strengths of about 300kV/cm. The applied voltage has 60 ns duration with a rise time of 10 ns. This paper focuses on the performance of the voltage and current characteristics, the shot-to-shot reproducibility, the pressure evolution of the diode, and the lifetime of the cathodes, not upon the radiated microwave power. The experimental results show that the graphite cathode is superior to the velvet cathode in the lifetime and the shot-to-shot reproducibility during the rep-rate operation, and it is a promising cathode for the MILO device under the rep-rate conditions.","PeriodicalId":426737,"journal":{"name":"2008 17th International Conference on High Power Particle Beams (BEAMS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131307999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interaction region has been constructed with good accuracy and microwave results measured using a vector network analyzer are given. The microwave dispersion agrees well with analytical and numerical theory. The transmission loss of this helically corrugated waveguide was measured to be ~1dB over the frequency range (84 - 104GHz). A cusp electron gun has been designed to generate a 1.5A, 40kV electron beam with an adjustable pitch angle (α) of up to 3. The beam was optimized through numerical simulation with an axial velocity spread, ΔVz/Vz, of 7% and Δα/α, of 10.4% at α=1.65. From simulation of the beam-wave interaction the maximum output power from the Gyro-BWO was predicted to be 10kW (CW) at 17% efficiency, with a 3dB frequency tuning range of ~84-104GHz.","PeriodicalId":426737,"journal":{"name":"2008 17th International Conference on High Power Particle Beams (BEAMS)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114149994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All capacitors in the modulator are recharged by a corresponding transformer separately through magnetic core transformers by a common high frequency power supply. This configuration simplifies the isolation design and arrangement. This scheme is suitable for work at high repetitive rate discharge due to its high charge efficiency. At the same time it retains the inherent switch protection capability of a solid-state Marx modulator. In our present work, a 22-stage test modulator has been built and has been successfully operated at repetitive rate of 20kHz, output voltage of 20kV, rise time of 150ns and pulse width of 3μs. The primary experiments verified the system feasibility. A system with higher parameters is under way.","PeriodicalId":426737,"journal":{"name":"2008 17th International Conference on High Power Particle Beams (BEAMS)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134053351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both ZP-0D program of a shell model and MARED-1D code of a MHD model are used for the simulation. By comparing results from each model, the characteristics of the Z-pinch implosion plasma driven by the PTS facility are investigated, and the load parameters are optimized. It is found that, a 15nH concentrator inductance is efficient for PTS facility to work at load currents up to 10MA. The optimized tungsten wire-array load is able to produce x-ray radiation at peak power up to 100TW and a best efficiency of conversion from the wall-plug of about 10%. By further investigation and comparison with experiment datum, it is supposed that PTS facility will has similar x-ray radiation productivity with Saturn facility operating at a long-pulse mode.","PeriodicalId":426737,"journal":{"name":"2008 17th International Conference on High Power Particle Beams (BEAMS)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126955104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the flashover between coils will occur because of un-uniform of the voltage distribution along the windings. Therefore, researching the voltage distribution of the Tesla transformer, improving the distribution by appropriate method and designing optimized structure of the windings would highly improve repetitive ability of the transformer, which have theoretical and engineering significance for the Tesla transformer's working in reliable and security. In order to study the voltage distribution on the pulse transformer's taper windings, according to the structure of the factual pulse transformer's taper windings, the voltage of a uniform tesla transformer's windings was measured in the paper. It is shown that the voltage distribution of taper winding is not uniform, and the distributed curve of it's interturn voltage is U shape with 100ns pulse. Based on the results, the methods to improve the distribution of the tape winding were bring forwards by measuring and analyzing the voltage distribution of other taper windings with different structure. These results can give some references to interturn insulation designs of Tesla transformer's windings.","PeriodicalId":426737,"journal":{"name":"2008 17th International Conference on High Power Particle Beams (BEAMS)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116072712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
