Of the West Germans, 22.1% of the men had at least one act of unprotected anal intercourse with a partner whose status was unknown (in the twelve months preceding the survey) as compared to 25.7% of the East Germans. Unprotected anal intercourse without knowing the partner'S HIV status is considerably more frequent in steady relationships. Although risk behavior does occur in the context! of casual sexual encounters, this form of risk contact remains sporadic (one to four times in the twelve months preceding the survey). Unprotected anal intercourse between partners with differing HIVstatus was found among 3.1% of the West Germans and 3.7% of the East Germans. Differences according to type of partnership are less pronounced for these men. These are contrasted with the results of a study of representations of HIV and AIDS within an international review of community health promotion literature aimed at gay men. The paper highlights the disparity between specific community responses to the epidemic as engendered in the cultural production of health promotion materials and the individual experience of HIV, suggesting a! paradigm for a community response to the epidemic which reflects the personal experience of gay men both infected and uninfected.","PeriodicalId":424151,"journal":{"name":"New International Directions in HIV Prevention for Gay and Bisexual Men","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134484733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their definition is simple and based on the observation that being aware of prevention guidelines does not necessarily lead people to adopt long-term and systematic behavioral changes. Instead, people use psychosocial processes that will give them the impression that they are taking no risks. We show how these processes are intrinsically related to the symbolic management and manipulation of the relationships to others, thus demonstrating that certain forms of risk-taking are non-rational.","PeriodicalId":424151,"journal":{"name":"New International Directions in HIV Prevention for Gay and Bisexual Men","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127660783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Approximately sixty participants attending the 1997 National Lesbian and Gay Health Conference and AIDS Fprum in Atlanta, GA, provided observations about how HIV prevention targeting men who have sex with men is changing in the United States. While new treatments may be the most noticeable change impacting HTV prevention, radical change due to the synergistic effects of several factors, not only recent medical advances, is seen as propelling a paradigm shift. Twelve challenges were identified and suggestions for facilitating progress in the changing paradigm enumerated. The future of HIV prevention is discussed.","PeriodicalId":424151,"journal":{"name":"New International Directions in HIV Prevention for Gay and Bisexual Men","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-08-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121915452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
