Thirty individuals were randomly chosen to participate in a craft session. Sixteen participants were touched while fourteen were not touched. Participants completed a questionnaire immediately after the craft session. Responses to the questionnaire were statistically analyzed by means of chi square. Results found that tactile stimulation positively impacts attitude and motivation in the elderly. The touch group participants indicated strong, positive responses regarding attitude toward the task and the instructor. The touch group showed greater willingness to work for the instructor and complete a task. Touching is a positive influence on the geriatric person's attitudes and behaviors toward both a task and therapist. More sensitive instruments are needed to determine the relationship between touch and mood since it was not significant in this study.","PeriodicalId":420561,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation Interventions for the Institutionalized Elderly","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132967495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A matched set of twelve patients participated in the regular treatment program of the facility, but not in the special program. All subjects were rated on the Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Evaluation, the Nurses Observation Scale for Inpatient Evaluation, and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale before and after the four-month program. Participants in the special program showed significant improvement on ratings of interpersonal effectiveness, and clinically demonstrated increased responsibility for the group attendance and appropriateness in group participation. No significant differences were noted on overall ratings of psychiatric dysfunction. Implications of the study for group leaders and for further research are discussed.","PeriodicalId":420561,"journal":{"name":"Rehabilitation Interventions for the Institutionalized Elderly","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115677606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
