This culminated with the publication of Die Transvestiten by Magnus Hirschfeld in 1910. Currently, the most commonly used terms for these conditions are transsexualism, gender dysphoia, and gender identity disorders (GID). With the publication of the 3rd edition of The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III) of the American Psychiatric Association in 1980, one finds mention of these GID for the first lime in a formal diagnostic classification system. These GID were further legitimized in 1987, with the publication of DSM-III-Revised. Currently, DSM-IV is under preparation by a subcommittee on GID. There is considerable controversy about revisions in terminology and classification of these GID currently under discussion. This paper also deals with the relationship between gender identity and sexual orientation. There is some evidence to suggest a correlation between age of onset of gender dysphoria an...","PeriodicalId":419979,"journal":{"name":"Gender Dysphoria: Interdisciplinary Approaches in Clinical Management","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127081205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the research in the field of hormone-behavior relationships has been carried out in non-patient groups or in patient groups other than transsexuals. Results of the few available studies of transsexuals are generally consistent with this research. In the existing literature the following hormonal effects on sexuality are reported: an enhancement of sexual interest, fantasies and initiative after androgen administration in female-to-male transsexuals; a loss of sexual interest as well as a loss of erections and the capacity to reach orgasm in male-to-female transsexuals after the use of antiandrogens. Less thoroughly investigated are the effects of hormone treatment on moods. In transsexuals, the following effects are reported: in male-to-female transsexuals less feelings of tension and more feelings of relaxation afte...","PeriodicalId":419979,"journal":{"name":"Gender Dysphoria: Interdisciplinary Approaches in Clinical Management","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114171332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among female-to-male transsexuals after SRS, i.e., in men, no regrets were reported in the author's sample, and in the literature they amount to less than 1%. Among male-to- female transsexuals after SRS, i.e., in women, regrets are reported in 1-1.5%. Poor differential diagnosis, failure to carry out the real-life- test, and poor surgical results seem to be the main reasons behind the regrets reported in the literature. According to three cases observed by the author in addition to personality traits the lack of proper care in treating the patients played a major role.","PeriodicalId":419979,"journal":{"name":"Gender Dysphoria: Interdisciplinary Approaches in Clinical Management","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128686827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
